Some are held down by inequalities? If someone is less skilled/intelligent they deserve less. Communism doesn't work my friend, nor is it fair. |

I suppose manners/etiquette can be seen as a type of "societal hangup" but then that would make chewing with your mouth closed and calling ahead when you're going to be late "societal hangups" too. "One who is rich does not make a display of his money or his possessions. Only a vulgarian talks ceaselessly about how much this or that cost him. 5 A very well-bred man intensely dislikes the mention of money, and never speaks of it (out of business hours) if he can avoid it. I'm not sure there is a standard. I get paid 0.5% commission on my sales and that still brings in a fair amount of cash. 10% and I'd be rich haha!

ya..
i think its just the way we were raised. i really couldnt care less how much someone else made. i might be curiouse just for curiosities sake if the thought arose. but it would never affect my thought of a person based on that. there are too many variables as to why they are making what they make BUT how much icecream is in their freezer.. now THAT would make me turn my head and affect what i thought of that person. BWAHAH (your GREAT! can i come over and eat some?) chewing with your mouth open. now THAT annoys me. :suspicious: |

Also, Social darwinism, as you suggested with your statement, isn't a complete explanation for inequality. When i speak of inequalities i'm also talking about the structure of society and it's institutions along with the identities that are formed within them. People want to hang onto power so they work the system to serve individual interests. I'm not sure you are really understanding the issue. Again, I'm not saying that individual effort doesn't help you in society. What I'm saying is that political economic structures prevent people from getting ahead and that you're "free" and "individual" ideas of society are just a story told to you to keep the consumer cycle moving. You're "Free" as long as you pat yourself on the back and flaunt your cash, right? But look what the freemarket school of thought has down to (some) of the developing world, i.e. Chile. You have to think on a larger scale to see this stuff. What do you think the civil rights and womans rights movement was all about? These were both times when certain people were thought inferior and incapable. They had to fight for an equal place in society and for the right to be successful. If you were to live in that era your rhetoric would be quite fitting for the times. If you think those biases from that era don't survive in todays world then you're delusional. If you think that government policy doesn't strip working families of their livelihood or that rising costs of living and diminishing affordable housing doesn't effect people then you are seriously living in a bubble. Obviously these problems are hard to answer but the first step is to stop dismissing everything bad around you as "survival of the fittest" or "human nature." We aren't animals in the forest anymore we live in a pluralist society. |

A friend of mine is a security guard and got $8.75 per hour fulltime to work 32 hours at a ritzy apartment where basically he did rounds while filing any requests from residents for his boss.
He states that he quit this job after a year due to making too many decisions that his supervisor was supposed to, even though he did get the job done. This was summer 2002. He reported stress due to demands of job (walking all floors of the 15+ story building, check boiler at top of building, check electricity and maintenance area of ground level, and all parking levels, take requests of residents, etc.). Overall, out of every 10 residents, only 2-3 actually treated him as a person. To the rest, he was a nuisance. Now he is making $9.25 part-time listening to good music working for an event-related security firm, is less stressed (tho he is on disability supplements due to an assault suffered on the job when he foolished signed onto the worst security firm operating in Surrey circa 2004). He states he wants to start a Goa trance band using computer-generated backbeat, but needs funding help ie how to write a proposal to give to appropriate Canadian arts funder. |

i am very empathetic for the homeless. as easy as it is for someone like US to find a job, or line up 5 interviews... it's not easy for the poor.
First off, they don't have internet access if they can't even afford a roof over their heads. We all know to take a shower and wear clothes that present yourself well in order to land a good job. Well, if you're on the street you probably are trying to get the job to GET new clothes. and you probably smell like the street. So that makes things hard as well. How about addiction? Sure some people go to the street because they're hooked on some shit, but some people meet that addiction ON the street so their daily income (however they get it) goes towards feeding their mental anguish rather than their physical well being. So lay off. The key word is opportunity. The fortunate typically create their own opportunities or easily recognize a good one when it shows up. The less fortunate usually aren't given the same yield of opportunities. |

you don't have the job that you have and make the money that you make because of intelligence or skill set, you have that job because of personality (and probably connections or networking). people are held back by inequalities, economic systems, political systems, bureaucracies, nepotism, etc, etc, all the time. i would say most people are held back by inequalities. i think your understanding of communism and our current economic system is pretty sad. |
