Negative energy released in this post. You might want to skip to the next one.
That's it.. Can't hold it in... "Cum here baby, quick! Tilt your head back...."
Why is it that every time a 'BIG UK HEADLINER' comes to town, he usually ends up being outdone by the Local Dj's? If I pay $15 to see and hear you play your best stuff (or close to it) and all I hear is the same tunes that every Dj has rocked at LEAST twice, (ie. Play that funky music) I get a little 'rrrRRRAAWWWWW!' My scene: I haven't heard a great set since summer time at Precision Cuts. Not to mention a shitload of amazing sets at Apex. (Great times!!) So for a breaks freak, I was itchin'... ESPECIALLY since the Almighty Deekline and the Fantasic Wizard's show was cancelled. (sadface.gif.) So when A.Skillz was on the menu, my friends and I were ready to dance like we had ants in our pants. Eeeeesus, what a let down... (sadderface.gif) I talked to a few others outside and I got the same vibe from them as well.. We all agreed that Vinyl Ritchie ripped it up. But as for A.Skillz, he played about 10 mins worth of stuff I haven't heard before and that was it. The rest of it was tracks that have been beaten to death since the 60's and 70's. Tunes that have been played at every other saturday night funky breaks parties that we've all heard before. Or most of us at least.... It seemed like more than half of the crowd was into it which is great for good vibes. But for the more seasoned, older generation breaks fans, they were just bobbin their heads and not really moving.. Like myself. :P:P:P New stuff is worth the price of admission. Not Kriss Kross with the wickity wickity wickity wickity wack shit. And PLEASE! No more House of Pain's 'Jump! Jump! off a cliff onto wickity jagged rocks if I hear that song one more fkn time.' So what I'm asking is, do promoters listen to the sets the Dj's are spinning for the night? Or do promoters get the last say in what they spin? Or as Dj's, I noticed half of you guys read the crowd and raise your head to see if anyone's moving and the other half doesn't. Do you guys come in with a game plan or adjust to the vibe? And do find that a lot of Dj's spin 'safe' tunes that they know most people will rock out to? What do you rest of you guys think?? Do the more seasoned breaks fans, or any genre of music fans for that matter, go to big headliners ready to be disappointed like I do?? Are you sick of spending your hard earned bucks on lame to mediocre shows? Speak up!! The promoters AND Dj's are listening.... |

^ exactly.
I guess I have phenomenal taste in "headliners" because the odd time I do go out for one of these events I always feel I got more than my moneys worth out of the experience. with that said. I don't listen to DJ's for the soul purpose of hearing music I haven't heard before. In fact, I've always been a fan of a DJ who can tastefully blend nostalgiac tunes of the past with the newest flavours. I don't pay attention to DJ's who's entire sets are dictated by release dates and record label names. Any goof with connections can pull that off. I'm not paying to hear connections, I'm paying for a good time... and depending on the circumstance, I'd say hearing "Play that Funky Music" would be a good time! |

Breaks are awesome, I wish there were more places to listen to breaks in the city. What sucks is over thought-out, over trendy electro being played, while some soulless saw wave goes up and down the portamento.

Vinyl Ritchie AND Mat the Alien on the 2 x 4 KILLED Shine with their opening set... it was one of the best I've heard in a long time.
Adam showed up playing a combination of new and old tunes.. a LOT of which have been remixed by him (basslines re-written, etc.) so in essence, the mixes you heard weren't from the 60's or 70's but the original that was sampled was. I agree he didn't play a huge amount of fresh new "breaks" but then again, he was booked for a party Hip Hop / Funk AND Breaks set. (It is Big Sexy Funk and so that's the type of tunes that are played at that night for the most part.) Saying all that, Adam did his job and did it well. On a side note, Vinyl Ritchie and Mat were very impressed with his set. If you want BREAKS, then hold off for a true Breaks show. I'll be rescheduling Deekline & Wizard in the new year, Krafty will be coming back in Aprilish, etc. Feel free to email me directly with who you and your friends want to see - [email protected] To Mateo's point about Breaks being dead... a LOT of artists have definitely gone the way of Electro more so than Breaks for sure - Rogue Element, Malente, Sharam Jey all come to mind. |

THE BEST PART ABOUT A VANCOUVER BREAKS CLUBNIGHT IS THAT ONLY THE OPENING DJ NEEDS TO BRING RECORDS, AS THEY ARE THE SAME ONES EVERYONE ELSE WAS GOING TO BRING ANYWAYS

it doesn't work the other way around tho, no sir... it's one of the many luxuries us young folks have that we take for granted. once you hit 40 you should feel morally obligated to conduct yourself as someone who isn't an ass hat. |
