If you're looking for something that you can do web browsing and IMing on for a reasonable price, your best bet is Telus or Bell. Telus has the $15/month unlimited email/messaging/web browsing package on any voice plan over $30. This is on the HTC Touch, Blackberry, and one other HTC phone. Bell has the $7/month unlimited web browsing/email/messaging on the HTC Touch only, with no minimum on the voice plan.
I just switched over to Bell myself and grabbed the Touch. It's a great phone, almost everything is done through the touch screen, runs Windows Mobile 6 (which has Word/Excel/Outlook), has Windows Messenger, amonst other programs. If you know someone who works for Bell, you could get them to put you on a good corporate plan. I got put on the UBC plan, which has 250 daytime minutes, E/W at 6pm, voice mail, call display, and per second billing for $27/month ($17.30 + 8.95 + 0.75). Web Browsing and texting added $15/month. |

IF YOU ARE DOING "REAL WORK" AS IN "I WANT MY EXPERIENCE FROM RECEIVING TO WRITING EMAILS TO SCHEDULING TO TEXTS TO BE FLAWLESS" THEN BERRY IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO
IF YOU WANT "GEE WHIZ" FOR A MONTH THEN "ARGH FUCK" FOR THE REST OF YOUR TIME THEN YOU CAN SETTLE FOR A WINDOWS MOBILE DEVICE o |

YEAH THE PERL KEYBOARD TAKES ABOUT A DAY AND THEN ITS PRETTY FAST. THE ONLY TIME I HATE IT IS WHEN I NEED TO TYPE IN SOMETHING TECHNICAL (LIKE DOING AN SSH SESSION, LOL@ TRYING TO TYPE OUT AN AWK STATEMENT ON THAT THING) OR WHEN IM ENTERING A PASSWORD WITH MULTIPLE NUMBERS/LETTERS LIKE "GR))87m6" OR SOMETHING
AS LONG AS YOU ARE WRITING NORMAL WORDS ITS COOL o |

I personally have a WM6 HTC Apache on Telus. Mobile browsing is seriously over-rated, but I can understand the need for it. The true benefit of the smartphone is truly email. The next bit of functionality that is truly useful is GPS.
Blackberrys are king for email in their simplicity and function over form design. They don't have particularly strong abilities in multimedia or web browsing, but keep in mind that Blackberrys are frickin' everywhere, so support of their mobile browser is building, despite its inadequacies. Software is plentiful for Blackberrys but little is free and RIM keeps tight reigns on the Blackberry SDK. Blackberrys excel at email, everything else, including the phone capability, are secondary pursuits. The phone capability, is however, world-class, and better is better than may windows Mobile devices. RIM controls the hardware and most of the software for Blackberrys, they are the Apple of the smartphone market (before Apple showed up, anyway). Their products function as advertised, but very, very rarely will you be surprised with any functionality. Windows Mobile Devices are king for customization and flexibility, they also support HTML email (which to my knowledge still isn't available on Blackberrys). Their mobile browser has been around for a lot longer than Blackberry's, but it's total shit. If you've played with an iPhone you'll be immediately hit with how medieval Pocket IE is. Opera Mobile can be purchased (and if you get a WM6 smart phone, its a requirement, not an option) for about $9. There is a lot of free software for Windows Mobile as it is pretty easy to code for. Windows Mobile devices are just that, Mobile Windows devices. There is lots of software for them, and apart from the Achilles Heel of the web browser, make excellent smartphones. I would, however, caution you against getting a smartphone that doesn't have a hardware keyboard. Even in the case of the iPhone, the lack of a hardware keyboard greatly, and I stress GREATLY, reduces the functionality of the phone. If you are currently with rogers seek out a friend that is also on Rogers with a Blackberry or Windows Mobile device and swap SIMs with them to try out the phone. |

HTC Touch looks better on paper. Not worth your time. This is my second time going back to exchange it and now I'm switching phones entirely. However not completly saying that windows mobile is bad, cause it is really good. Just if you decide to go windows go with a hardware qwerty for sure.
