It's a valid arguement, presented terribley.
A national anthem is written based on the offical languages of the country. At an offical international event it would be silly to present it any other way. Expecting different versions at the Olympics to be sung is naive. And sending this on your work email is just plain stupid. |

Wood went on a really good rant on ravevic the other day about immigration and adapting to the Canadian culture.
It strikes me as kind of arbitrary that they'd do it in hindi and not farsi or japanese or chinese or vietnamese or any of the other parent languages of immigrants that live in Vancouver. |

im surprised this is even an issue.
i think the only people who care about political correctness are white quilt liberal retards who are too afraid to offend anyone on one side and reactionary ignorant retards who think the other group actually matter. Everyone in the middle just think their both dicks |

If this country had a native language, it would have to be from a aboriginal community/culture. To be honest I have more and more patient with ppl who have a hard time communicating in english. I dont know why, but I guess its just the magic of our country. Unless you're aboriginal, we are all immigrants with an other background out side of Canada.
I can really get annoyed with all this political correctness. We've created such a free liberal nation, yet someone always seems to get offended. Our nation is still growing and diverseing in culture. Just because the English and French where the first to settle here shouldn't mean that their culture should be the bases of our nation. |

the reason that Bruce Allen gets labeled as being racist though is because of his "us and them attitude." in Canada their is only "us" as we are a multi cultural nation. we are all Canadian, end of story.so when he says that immigrants need to come here and learn to fit in or go home he is just wrong. immigrants have every right to keep their cultures and still live here as Canadians. that said almost every immigrant that I know makes an effort to learn the language as it's pretty to hard to get by without doing so. |

You don't see nations like Argentina switching their national anthems to either Italian or German which make up a huge percentage of the existing populace. When is enough, enough? Last edited by cubed; Jan 09, 08 at 06:27 PM. |

I studied it last year. I also wrote an arrangement of it for solo guitar (classical).
It's strange that it's not common knowledge that it was actually a French folk song. And that the English lyrics don't mean the same thing as the French lyrics... but I didn't even know that until I studied it. To be honest. I don't even know O Canada in English. When I had to sing it everyday in high school, it was the bilingual version. At Senators and 67's games, same thing. However, I know all the words in French. Back on topic (Sort of. I'm not going to address the improper way that email came across. It's pretty obvious it was inappropriate) : There's a Native version I discovered. Not actually sure which dialect. Sorry, I don't know much about Native-Canadian Bands/Tribes. That seems acceptable to me. They were here first. They should be allowed to make their own translation of the anthem. However I draw the line for anything beyond that. If I move to another country... I wouldn't expect them to have a version of their anthem in English, specifically for me. I would rather hear it in their language, and learn it in that language. What the point of moving to another country if you want everything to be the same as the country you're already in!? |
