HUGE sums of money. Estimates to go through entire course of auditing have been made at around $365,00-$380,00.

i dont think most people have a problem with the beliefs of these people. sure, go ahead and believe some in some alien etc.

it's more the fact the criminal activities and "fair game" scare tactics that they use. again, scientology is a lot more than simply believing that you're inhabited by an alien species.

yep, its about bully tactics and mis-using copyright laws to hide evidence of the cult that they are. oh, and killing their own members (which is now 'fair game' due to the contract you are forced to sign before becoming a member) *Seriously it has a clause that allows them to decide that you are having a psychotic break, and then they can abduct you and torture you until you either die or are 'cured' by their miracle therapy.

the alien / xenu thing isn't even commonly accepted in scientology anymore.

for those in this thread who mentioned having family who joined, be aware that it is likely they will end up broke at the very least.

We're aware that he's sunk money into it... to his mind it's money well spent because he's getting valuable training in how to lead a good life and learning the secrets about how the world works and how to effect positive change.

Mom hoped it was just a phase and would pass. Dad tried to argue him out of it at every opportunity.. It's been years now, what more can we do? He's 25 years old, he has to make his own decisions in the end.

I will say that he seems happy almost all the time.... but I will also say that that just adds to the creepiness for me.

Really, that's like saying you would cut contact with a friend for converting to Muslim, just because of the radicals out there.
scientology in its self is a pretty extreme religion, id say it would be the same as becoming a fundamentalist muslim or christian in the same vein as falwell or bin laden. it would be a shock because most of my friends are agnostic or athiest.

i would be concerned about their mental health if they made any radical change but i wouldn't cut them off.

on a side note to that id like to see military service in combat become a prerequisite for the president, it seems they're ready to engage in war without knowing what it means.
