how come asian style music has never made it big North America? srs sociology hwk Q
you can sort of think of the North America, and the US in particular as the proving ground for international music since they have immigrants from all over, and when you look at the top 40 billboard you indeed have an eclectic infusion all the way from Reggae dance hall (kingston) to ghetto rap (Jay-z) to more country style (Kelly Clarkson), latin music (Enrique), metal (Rammstein), British style indie bands (Bloc Party), etc.
anywho, why hasn't 'asian-style' music gained a foothold yet? |

Go walk around Metrotown, particularly around upstairs from Chapters, and tell me that asian music isn't big here.
Jpop is pretty huge amongst the Japanese population here, just like how Banghra is really big amongst the Indian populous. It's just culture differences. Pet Shop Boys aren't that big out there except in underground dance circuits, but they've been one of the main driving forces of pop music for the last 20+ years in the UK. Why? Because brits listen to stuff like psb and robbie williams and the like, whereas those artist have only had minor success in north america.... |

Mmm hmm.
Considering that this is a pretty dull homework question, it sounds like a first year introductory course whose answer you can bs through without citing "evidence" or even getting opinions from fnk. |

layers of bs always sound more credible than just my own. please contribute :)

Cuz asian music fukkin sucks. wtf kind of question is this. People in America speak english they're not gonna listen to someone singing in another language. Only place I can see it gaining a foothold is Richmond cuz more than half the residents are asian.
This is the only good asian music I've ever heard. |

Amerie - half Korean
Ayumi Hamasaki - Japanese I think it's the style of the different genres that are just slightly different that don't cater to North America. I know that years back there were two Korean groups called "SeoTaeJi" that were going to breakthru and also H.O.T. I personally think they are highly popular right now in North America, but unless you really listen and look, one wouldn't really know. |

Cubismo is a croatian band that plays cuban music. They did pretty good in Japan though. It's kinda weird.
As for asian music not getting a foot hold in North America... Traditional Asian music, by and large isn't big in Asia. China is really big on pop stars. While sometimes incorporating asian elements, in the same way pop songs here will occasionally incorporate beats and insturments from other traditinal sources. In Japan, popular music is similar to North American styles, but with their own cultural twist. The reason Indian style music makes it into North American music is that traditional Indian music is still a big part of their pop scene. Check out the top 10 albums in Japan/China, and you'll see this is pretty easy to figure out. |
