internal job applications
Hello,
I'm hoping to rely on people's expertise on here seeing as how I know we've got recruiters and HR experts. (looking your way kraig!) If you're applying for a job internally, is it better to craft your resume based only on your own experiences and accomplishments in the company? Seems to make sense to me seeing as how I've worked at the same place for years and job experience from 5 years ago is not so relevant anymore. I have applied and succeeded in getting promotions internally previously utilizing a blended resume, but at this point I'm not sure if that past experience is just wasting space when I could highlight my most relevant skills/experience. Thoughts? (please don't link me to something I can easily search for and locate in google.) |

Hi there Myrasauce...
It's all about quantifiable accomplishments so as you've already said, I would state those major accomplishments that you have achieved over the past 5 years within the company on your updated resume. I would also include your previous experience but make it truncated - IE: don't include all of it. Eg. Previous work experience prior to <insert your current company name here> ABC Company - January 03 - February 05 Assistant Manager - you get the idea. ALSO - having an internal reference (your current manager is best) is also a great way to seal the deal. Someone who can speak to the amazing work you've done over the past 5 years and who can speak to why you're qualified for the role you're applying for. Hope that helps. |

i think a combination of both would be best. your internal accomplishments will have the most impact because they'll know what you're talking about and "get it". however, if you list accomplishments from other jobs in a similiar way and show them that you understand how they relate to the job you're going for, they will be impressed. just skim over anything unrelated though.

the person hiring will give the job to the person that fits the qualifications in this order:
a) will tow the line in their direction b) has seniority c) gets along with others d) is the most qualified for the job D is about 5% of that list, and a resume is about 1%, tied with e) usually shows up to work |
