XM and Sirius merger approved
XM / Sirius merger approved! - Engadget
Not sure how many people here actually use satellite radio, but interesting to say the least. Will this merger finally allow XM and Sirus to start turning a profit? Will there stations stop rotating the same 30 songs in a row? Will this lead to lower costs, and higher adoption rates? In my opinion, no. Satellite radio is a great idea that is almost impossible to pull off effectively. And neither company has executed any of their features effectively. Both companies had had trouble attracting large advertisers. A local connection is needed in radio, especially one that is almost exclusively used in cars. A local news report is far different then a national one, and traffic reports are necessary every station. By charging a monthly fee for a service openly provided for free, it's shot itself in the foot. Especially when the service provided is only marginally better. Opinions? |

I haven't had either or service, but I was rather impressed when a friend of mine hooked up XM at an Ultimate game. The music was way better and I actually got introduced to a few underground tracks that I hadn't heard of before that I liked muchly (I think that was where I first heard the Guns N Bombs remix of Fancy Footwork by Chromeo)...

IMO I think its an ok merger, considering the current position where XM and Sirius stands independently. They will however, need to provide various other programming or other technologies included in there service to grab the attention of more customers. The hype towards satellite radio is certainly not the same when it first came out.
That being said... how are they going categorize there current stations and content? Going to be interesting.... |

From what I've gathered, the main goal of this merger is to cut the cost of delivering the service, not the operations. Sirius/XM stations are easy to maintain and operate since 99% of it is automated (Howard Stern's show is recorded by himself and sent to Sirius). It's simple to offer two choices, and let customers think they have a choice. |

it should turn out to be good for everyone. i had xm for awhile and even tho i have trouble listening to most house and thats allt he electronica they play, they still have decent track selection. as for the other stations, the joint always delivers (101 xm i think) and they have some damn good jazz stations and classic rock stations.
