Basically, a Large Hadron Collider is a particle accelerator designed to smash together sub-atomic particles so we can observe them and figure out what they're made of and capable of.
There's a running theory that attempting to collide the particles will emulate the conditions of the Big Bang, and as such a universe will be created within, possibly creating a Black Hole and sucking our whole planet/solar system/galaxy into it.
Most scientists have discredited this theory however. But throw a few digg articles in and you have widespread paranoia on the internets.
