WINNIPEG -- A fundamentalist church group from the U.S. has announced it plans to picket the funeral of Tim McLean Jr. in Winnipeg, declaring, "God is punishing Canada."

"People are absolutely outraged about it," said Doug Mitchell, a friend of McLean's for about seven years.

"When it comes to the (Westboro) Baptist Church, they don't even deserve to be on the same page as Tim McLean. He was too great a guy," said Mitchell.

Led by pastor Fred Phelps, the Westboro Baptist Church from Kansas issued a release saying they would picket McLean's funeral this weekend.

Phelps' daughter, Shirley Phelps-Roper, said about seven church members are expected to come to Winnipeg.

"What we're doing is trying to connect dots," Phelps-Roper told Sun Media last night.

"We're trying to get you to see that your rebellion against the standards of God, your disobedience to the commandments - your idols, your false gods, your filthy ways have brought wrath upon your head," she said.

Winnipegger Trevor Wilson heard about the church's plan to protest. He said he was appalled.

"Everyone is entitled to free speech, but it is absolutely disgusting to protest that poor man's funeral," said Wilson.

"Why this poor man? What did he ever do to warrant their hate?"

These fuckers better get stopped at the boarder. I have little tolerance for those who cram their religion down peoples throats.

It is my firm belief that God is punishing us for not taking care of those with mental illness.

This church does this constantly. They make some announcment but never follow through with it. The few times they do it's normally just 3 or 4 of them.

I watched an interview with the head lady. Pretty much just an attention whore. But it's easy for her to get attention. See's something like this, email a few press releases, suddenly you are important and people want to interview you.

Group two made it through, they didn't have any signs with them.

Quite frankly if I knew this guy and I saw these protesters at his funeral, I'd probably walk up and start punching them in the face. By all accounts this guy was a saint and doesn't deserve this type of attention.

Don't care if they got riled up and started beating me down. If they're such holy people they could have some respect for the dead.

overly conservitive christians that live by the old testament disturb me greatly.

anyone that says this sort of thing is very self involved and likely have no education outside of their needs. some people just have no idea what the real world is like and dont understand that we live in some of the best countries in the world. people dont understand how good we have it. peop[le dont understand that this is EVERYDAY LIFE for people in third would countries.
