Canadian Election called for October 14
I really wonder if Canadians will care as much about their own election as they do about the one happening in the USA.
Is it me or does Harper have a knack for calling elections when the country is completely unprepared and otherwise disinterested in having one? article here: globeandmail.com: Election called for Oct. 14 |

Interested or not, I encourage everyone to read up on the campaign platforms and vote based on what your mind and your gut tell you. Since the last election, I think the majority of FNKers by age are at a point where politics actually affect their lives and future directions...so get involved this time even if it's your first chance :)
//wishbone //probably voting for a different party than you |

One thing of note: Canadian elections are truly free-balloting. My mom was once Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) for the Brampton/Georgetown riding (for a few years, the largest in Canada) in Ont. I've worked elections since 18, Federal and Provincial. From creating Qualified Voters Lists to Poll Supervisor (the guy who's running things in the gym at the school you go to vote w/ about 8 - 12 polling stations) The candidate Scrutineers are bitches, but, ultimately, every election I've been a part of (yeah, only one Provincial, BC) it has been honest and fair. (ie: legal) Frosty (doesn't question the system, but, the voters' heads...) |

Harper the hypocrite. Whatever happened to him supporting fixed election dates? Anyone else getting these lol flyers from the conservatives. I especially like the one with the needle in the playground that reads "Safe?" Maybe if his party supported safe injection sites there might be one less needle off the street?
I read another globe article that suggested Harper's conservatives want to call an election now before the economy really feels the brunt of the worlds woes so they can toot Harper as the "manager" of the economy through rough times before he's blamed for the coming downturn. I'll be following both the US and Canadian elections per usual. Looks like it will be an interesting fall/winter forreals. Last edited by decypher; Sep 07, 08 at 02:57 PM. |

What Harper loves to do is force a country that doesn't want an election into one, and that is exactly what he did last time.
I mean come on, putting an election the day after a holiday weekend is just stupid, but again not surprising. totally agree w/ wishbone though, as apathetic as everyone would like to be we should all be voting. |

Not saying I particularly like our conservative Government, but if harper doesn't win(meaning either Dion or Layton does *shudders*) I'll be waiting for news on the US election(if McCain wins I'll be looking in to moving down their.. if that dumb f*** Obama wins... I'll be researching other countries. lol)

For the love of his holy noodliness, people. Take a lesson from the David Emerson debacle and vote for representatives, not leaders.
Go to your all candidate's debates and decide who would be the best rep for your voice in parliament. I know a lot of people don't think backbenchers or minority opposition members don't make a difference in parliament, but given that our last two governments have been minority ones it doesn't take that much to realize just how untrue that notion really is. |

Last election, even in spite of my despise for the Liberals, I voted for David Emerson because he was the lesser evil between the useless NDP candidate and the Conservative candidate who just said "vote for me" if you tried to ask him something. As much as I wanted to vote Conservative, I just couldn't waste my vote on a tool like that guy. In the end, Emerson just to the Conservatives anyways, so it all worked out for me in the end. |

honestly im undecided. probably gonna end up voting liberal, im feeling this green shift. man we need to reduce corporate and personal income taxes but we also need man up on our education system and the Canadian Forces so we can protect what we have. and the cons with that stupid bullshit about insight and locking fiends up, we've done that for the last 80 years and it hasnt solved anything. my main beef with them is their not willing to try anything to see if it works, we cant keep doing the same things and expect a different result.
as for the ndp, like rawb said, i'm not down with unicorns. those dudes are competing on george bush's level of the incompetence olympics. id actually vote for the greens if they had a snowball's chance in hell. |
