Beneath the breathtaking Alpine vineyards, in a circular tunnel 27 kilometres long and 100 metres below the surface of the Earth, scientists are trying to re-create what happened in the first few seconds of the Big Bang. This is the biggest physics experiment in history and it happens underneath the French-Swiss border!
The CERN experiments could reveal more about dark matter, antimatter and possibly hidden dimensions of space and time. It could also find evidence of the hypothetical particle - the Higgs boson - sometimes called the God particle. It is believed to give mass to all other particles, and thus to matter that makes up the universe.
Switzerland, in spite of being a small country, is almost omnipresent at CERN. Swiss scientists are active in a large number of experiments. There is also a very strong community of theoretical particle physicists in Switzerland.
As a Swiss, I am proud that Geneva, a city with an unprecedented international reputation, is the home of CERN!
ya gotta see this. it's an official CERN release. almost 3 million views. prollly the best way to make people appreciate the thing they pull off there. CERN makes me proud to be Swiss!
