new firearm laws, est. 75% of owners to comply
January 1st marks new gun registration throughout Canada; complies all owners to have any firearms registered by Dec 31, 02 or face prosecution. They (Canadian Firearms Centre) estimate close to 20 million guns in Canada and so far around 5.7 million have been registered. Original cost was estimated around a million dollars, but has ROCKETED to cost Canada over a BILLION! A billion dollars! Most gun accounted for are rifles, and shotguns. So as millions of Canadians rush to jammed phone lines, and overwhelmed gov. websites to try to meet the Dec 31 deadline of registering Canada becomes a little safer.. or not? Does forcing gun owners to be tagged help you sleep a little safer at night? or does it just sound like your right to "bare arms" is a little more marketed by big brother? I have heard mixed reviews about this new law, some saying its costing more then its worth..
Your thoughts? -myles |

I agree, there no way it can cost that much. I also don't think it makes it safer either, the people who are willing to register their guns are'nt the people that are a threat anyhway, its guns off the street that commit all the crimes.

It's great that people are registering their guns, but like RJay says the people who are registering aren't the ones we should be worried about.
I suppose the scary thing is that when you have a gun in the home you are more likely to use it than those that don't have guns in their home. Sounds obvious, but if you think about it -- how easy is it to reach for the gun? But what does registering a gun accomplish. The people who commit crimes are not going to be using registered guns. It seems to me that trying to control guns is about as hopeless as trying to control underage drinking, drugs or smoking. The government doesn't have the resources to prevent this from happening. It doesn't surprise me that the gov't has underestimated the cost of this new law as things like this have happened in the past. |

So because of all the complaints about people trying to meet the deadline to register guns. Gun owners need only submit a letter showing their intent to register their gun(s). Kinda ridiculous.
