id3 tags are saved to the file itself. so yes - tag em in you computer and load em up in another and the tagging will appear in another.

depends - i think that itunes stars work differently than for instance, windows media player tags...

also, there 5 different versions of tags as well and like adam said, different versions of itunes might cause problems.

what are you trying to do? play serato off a usb drive through itunes?

check the id3 spec, it might not support a "rating" so the rating you see in itunes might be application specific

^bingo. that's probably it

[EDIT]: that is it, since you can only edit the rating via the itunes front end (rather than doing it in the file info)

basically i d/l a bunch of tunes, import them into i tunes rate them. move them to a usb to transfer to another pc. The Itunes on the pc im transferring to is setup with smartplaylists (3 stars b/w 100-230 bpm etc) however these new tunes I've imported don't have any of that info with them.

it's likely that itunes does not save ratings to the track and only to the itunes database. However, if you're using smart playlists, why don't you just create a playlist using the range of bpms that you want.:)

I do use a playlist with the range of bpms but I also have playlists which have the bpm range as well as the star rating. As an example 3 stars may represent opening tracks only and I may include bpm range from 100-110 as a rule. If I cant copy the star rating than I guess only the bpm rule will work. I guess this is why people use the comments field rather than the ratings.

or you could start rating the stars after copying. That's probably your best bet. I find itunes great for managing a single library in a single location, but once you try syncing multiple drives, computers, or libraries, you really need to develop a good system to avoid the headaches.
