The NHL suspended hockey's most hated player, Sean Avery, for talking trash to the new player dating his ex girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert. Here's the deal -- Cuthbert's new boyfriend, Dion Phaneuf, plays for the Calgary Flames -- and during a practice session in Calgary today, Avery got the media's attention and said the following: "I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about. Enjoy the game tonight." Avery is out pending a hearing with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

The indefinite suspension is bullshit. At most it should be 1 game. If this was said on the ice, no one would have even cared.
Sure it shows an apparent lack of class and wit, but aside from that? Start slapping him with hefty fines if you want to make a point.

i think the biggest thing is that it was so obvious it was pre-meditated and stupid.
the best part is the interviews with turco + teammates after the game where they are all so completely not-stoked with him. i know avery doesn't care if people think he's a douchebag, he revels in it, but it's awesome because every time he does something like this brett hull looks more and more like the fucking tool he's always been.

Yeah the one thing that made him look even more like an ass is that he approached the media to give a comment (as reported on the team1040).
Brett Hull had an interview today on theFan590 but i didnt get a chance to listen.

as a hockey player i have said much worse things to the other team to get them off their game, but it's all on-ice. i am right there for that dude to throw a punch at.
this metagame shit avery is doing is just bullshit. if this was on the ice it would be no problem.

the NHL is suspending him to cover their own asses. They don't wanna look like they condone this kind of thing, and they also don't wanna be held responsible for anything that might happen afterwards, such as phaneuf (or someone else) destroying avery and then have people say well they didn't intervene.
the other problem is that everyone's making such a big deal out of it. if they just stopped playing the clip and stopped bringing attention to it then it wouldnt even matter. Avery brought the reporters over to announce this shit, and now they're reporting it just like he wants.

"Mr. Avery has been warned repeatedly about his conduct and comments, which have too often been at odds with the manner in which his more than 700 fellow players conduct themselves. Playing in the National Hockey League is a privilege, requiring a high standard of personal behavior. Mr. Avery forfeits that privilege for six games. Mr. Avery has expressed remorse for his recent comments and has sought a professional anger management evaluation. I will require that he follow through with that process as a condition of his returning to the ice and that he complies with any and all recommendations."
