man, i just recently saw bangkok nights and cage was awesome ... awesomely horrible that is
shitty acting that i've grown to love, ex. he's eating a spicy food at a restaurant with a deaf woman who does sign language, cage proceeds to vocalize everything she signs in textbook facepalm manner "oh you want me to put this in my mouth" ... "oh it's cooling down the spice" or with keanu... "woah, deja vu, I saw a cat, and then ... i saw another cat" both are horribly awesome |

keanu is waaay worse.
originally wasnt a fan of cage, but hes managed to squeak by barely criticized the last few movies of his ive seen so he must be doing something at least a little bit good. IMO lord of war was good as was that other movie he didnt suck so bad in |

So Cage is FFC's relative but how do we explain Keanu? |

Jared Leto and Keanu are the two who should be paired up. Pretty boys without any acting chops to speak of. Keanu is monotone and oafish, Leto is melodramatic to a cringe-worthy extent.
Nic Cage has been in some crap movies, but he's also been in Raising Arizona, Adaptation, Matchstick Men, probably some others I'm forgetting.. and he's been GOOD IN THEM, unlike Keanu's hit movies that succeed despite him, not because of him. |

they are a different kind of actor, but they are not terrible actors by any stretch.
We had a discussion about this back when i was studying acting, and what where these types of actors seem to lack- they make up for by being a blank slate that the audience can easily identify with, and sort of step into the character's shoes themselves. They've made careers out of being the simple,every-man types in their movies rather than being quirky character actors like the Johnny Depp's and Dustin Hoffman's of the business that people tend to give more respect. |

i was using quirky as more of a descriptor for character actors, that's not to say that nicolas cage is without personality quirks. His acting style is more typical of lead actors rather than character actors; although he brings a certain vulnerability/humanity to his roles that are often absent with many lead actors you'll find with guys like brad pitt, tom cruise etc.
my opinion is that actors like nicolas cage and keanu reeves can only be as strong as the story/director. |

K, Nic Cage has WON an oscar for Leaving Las Vegas (in which he was good), AND been nominated for Adaptation (in which he may have been even better). And his performances were pretty good in Matchstick Men, Moonstruck, even Weatherman despite the movie itself being weak.
And Keanu, well there aren't ANY "good" performances to note. All of the good movies he's been in have had pretty bad acting from him. He was pretty good in the Matrix since it was kind of campy and fitting. He's good at being like that....He is an intense actor, he just isn't very good at looking natural and 'real' like most good actors. |
