does anyone feel that international students have lowered or compromised standards?
no racism, but I sorta feel this is the case for me right now.
bear in mind as a BC boy i've been surrounded with international students my whole life and never noticed anything untoward. Now suddenly as i'm doing directed studies with a group of people where they're all international students and they seem to not be able to express themselves or fully understand me it seems i am truly fucked and that i'll have to potentially carry this whole thing. Other ways things have been affected is in classes where class discussion is essential and with the ratio of international students as high as it is, discussion is usually kept to a bear minimum, or the same 3 or 4 people do all the talking again and again. discuss. |

I dunno, i heard a lot of corruption takes place and the TOEFL is not all that it's cracked up to be, whereby they either cheat to get passed it or they take classes that only teach you how to pass the test and not much more. Even then, one's motivation is much more important and indicative of your chances of success than some stupid paper and pen test. anyway my beef isn't with the international students but rather this is just an emblematic example of how bureaucratic/corrupt and out of touch institutional education has become. I remember going abroad to Vietnam and our cyclo driver was better at english than the 'university student' we hired. go figure. I'm sure in the past international students were of a different quality, because I talk to my group and they're pretty upfront that they're here to earn a 'western' degree just to pad their resume back home. they have their own cliques and pocket translators and it's not extremely crucial nor are they particularily interested in soaking up Canadian culture and English as a whole. If you had people coming here because they grew up watching American movies or whatever and were enamored with that, I think things would be totally different. |

I assure you that language barriers aside the international students I have met were on-point in their academic abilities. Also I find it comical that you suggest that British Columbian/Canadian standards of education are that high. The best international students go to the Ivy League&MIT. |

The only experience I have had is at an off-brand, no-name school, though I have to say that the abilities of other students have zero relevance in my academic success, be they domestic or international.
Ultimately whether or not you learn or achieve anything is in your own hands. Blaming your shortcomings on other students is fucking ridiculous. |

This is sort of like saying UBC is only for doctors/art students/english lit majors. |

When I used to teach at BCC, my students would show up late with wicked hangovers. They'd spend the rest of the day flirting with eachother. Eg. Joanna was a Mexican student who use to wear tube tops to class and flirt with ultra-conservative Korean guys. Also, it's virtually impossible to fail at these schools.
The Japanese students were usually a little more diligent, but very flirty as well. There were no rules about fraternizing with students, so I often took advatage of this situation. |
