I have been living on my own and supporting myself entirely since I was 17... I am now 24.

I started room-and-boarding and then moved into a basement suite in Cloverhole, then into my own condo in Langley, then to a condo with my current roomie in Richmond and then we both recently moved to our pimp pad in Yaletown. Rent has increased with each move. :-(

Without a doubt it is extremely difficult to not only live on your own, but support yourself entirely -- some live on there own and still have financial support from parents.

To anyone moving out or thinking on moving out - sit down and do a budget... look at your pay stubs you have from work and figure out how much net income (money you have after taxes) is coming in bi-weekly and monthly/yearly, etc... Then in a seperate area, note all of your real expenses... for me that would be rent, car payment, car insurance, cell bill, etc. -- things that I MUST pay for every month. Then compare that with your net income... very quickly looking at numbers you can see if it's going to work or not. (I am a total geek when it comes to stuff like this... I have Excel spreadsheets and stuff.)

I agree totally with Werdy and a few others that it depends on your post secondary choices... It's pretty hard to have a serious full time job, go to school close to full time and work as well.

Kudos to all those who are supporting themselves entirely, living on there own, working and going to school in some way.

i officially moved out just after i turned 20... i was gonna make the move at 17 or 18, but i wanted to try out post secondary, and i knew i couldn't do that if i was paying for my own place.

i'd say take kraig's advice about budgeting... cuz that's definately an essential to figure out BEFORE you move... otherwise you'll be finding yourself 2 days after payday with $20 to last you for the 12 days until next pay... but i'd add on to his budget list, things that AREN'T necessity... you really have to know yourself, and know your impulses, know how stupid you are with money, know that you're probably gonna wanna go clubbing a couple times a month, etc... it's always good to leave a couple hundred dollar buffer zone in your budget, ONTOP OF YOUR BEER/SHINY TOY MONEY.

personally, i record my necessity expenses as $300 over what it really is, to create a little buffer zone. still leaving myself with more than enough play money... but that "buffer zone" money really does serve as a necessity. even if it's blown on a $70 lunch here, and a sweater you really didn't need there... it's money that you sometimes just NEED to spend... well maybe it's just me cuz i love to throw my money away... but u could always use that money and throw it in the bank every month...

and never underestimate your food budget. if anything, i'd say save DOUBLE than what you need for food... unless you're fat... then i dunno what u should do... buy jib instead of KD...

time management is also important if you wanna live healthily on your own. sometimes there just isn't enough time in a day to go to work, cook, clean, chillax, and get a decent sleep. so if you wanna maintain a reasonably clean looking place (CLEAN TOILET), have clean dishes to eat off of, and time to cook food, and not sleep in and miss work (cuz that's gonna cost you $$$), you gotta plan your week out. if you don't stay on track, you're gonna get sick, you're gonna miss work and go broke, and you're not gonna want to invite people over cuz you've got empty pizza boxes and kleenexes all over the place...

i could probably go on for hours with wouldbe advice... but i've got a mess to make in my kitchen

i still live at home.. because i'm 17 and haven't even graduated yet..

but i know i'll be staying here for a while.
i'm just not sure how long because i don't know how long i'll be doing the post-secondary thing.
but it'll be longer because i'm doing that part-time, while working partt-ime so i'll have money and not totally rely on my parents because i can't do that. and i don't want to.

so i'll be here for a while, but it's not bad. we get along okie so i don't mind at all.

sorry but how in the world do you guys support yourself when your 17?! if ure a normal kid ud still be in your grade11/12 year.

i work as much as i can right now and im already extremly budgetted and i only pay for my phone bill, groceries and all my own expenses. (i have to admit i can cut back in my unnessasary expenses). i chose to support myself this way because i want to prove to my parents that im responsible and that if i move out young, i would be able to support myself. (unlike my sister whos 22 and still eats, sleeps and lives off my parents..she doesn't even pay for her phone bill) being in an asian family and not goin to university and moving out young is very uncommon and i just want to prove to them that im somewhat independent....have to start young. (new years resolution is to start saving up for a car too..yay..good luck on that one)

As of today, I'm here with my parents (this could be the last day). I'm gonna go to Seattle and then after that I'm not really sure where I'm going. I might go back with my parents in a new place. But I think my new avatar should give a pretty good hint of where I wanna go but it's gonna be hard if I do. There's someone in BC who I might visit for a while but if I tried staying up there longer, I'm gonna need a helpful girlfriend or someone to stay with while I try and set up.

I'm 22 and I think it's time for a change.

I still do, but its all good, I do my own thing, pretty much whatever I want, and if my aunt moves out soon then I'll have a suite to myself which has its own living room, washroom, bedroom, kitchen and entrance, and its real nice cause it was built like a year ago. It'll cost some cash but I'm working and got some stuff on the side, otherwise I'd be a broke bum, but I can hold my own cell bill, insurance and whatever els I need. But if the suite doesn't go through, me and some friends are currently looking for a place.

i moved out of the house when i was 17. i started my first year of university at 17. i just turned 18 now. i've been living on my own for about 4 months now. but this is because i live in residence on campus but it still counts as living on your own. there are so many things that your parents do for you that you don't even acknowledge. such as doing your own dishes and the laundry and cleaning up around your place. i'm moving back in with my parents after school ends and staying there for the summer for sure. then after that i'll prob move out again.
i think a good age to be on my own is 21/22 ish? after i finish my 4 years of schooling and get a good career and able to afford everything on my own.

Bebu, what program are you going into that is so short and then guarantees a job upon completion? I'm jealous.

I still live at home. I have an obscenely good relationship with my parents, and that plus the fact that I'm a full-time university student means I don't feel the need or have the means to move out. I figure I'll move out at 21, after getting my B.A. I'll be going into Law at that point and will probably (hopefully) end up in Victoria.
