~ what is an 'educated' person? ~
i was in a very intriging discussion in class today , which was a product of the question, "what is an educated person?"
there was an array of view points, here was mine: i think the answer to this question is dependent on who, and where u ask. here in north america, or other developed countries, one could say that an 'educated' person is one who is well versed in todays technologies, or has sponged as many ideologies there is to sponge in the western world. now, we can ask this same question in a part of the world in which it has had limited contact with what we consider civilization (nomadic groups in the rainforests of the amazon, etc). in such a place, an 'educated' person wouldn't necessarily be an academic, but knowledgeable in other areas. such as the grazing patterns of the local wildlife for food, or what plant life is useful for medicines? what are u're thoughts? |

I take it you mean in general, right daniel?
Personally.. I think an educated person depends on where they are in life... Because everyone is more intelligent then another person in diffrent ways. So it's really hard to say.. I would say..I guess a person that gets through life is educated.. but what about the people that live in the poorer parts of Africa? or other 3rd world countries. I seriously don't know... I guess.. you could say that it's a person with GOOD common sense.. cause many people are lacking in that department |

in my opinion, theres a fine line between a person who is educated academically, and a person who is educated with reality. there are many kids out there who devote their lives to school, and to a certain degree it brings them success in their future carreers as engineers, doctors, lawyers etc. but the problem with these kind of people is that they lack a sense of the reality of the "real world". when i say reality, it means someone who can understand why there is poverty in the world, why deviant behavior is unavoidable, why people get emotional, why respect can go a long way.... all these things are learnt through personal experience and the more we overcome hardships in life as a result of the realities of the harsh world we live in, the more educated we become with reality.
a truly educated person is someone who has a good mix of knowledge with reality as well as what they learnt in school. idealy (and let me stress that word), someone with a university degree as well as a good resume of first hand experience in their field, as well as many other fields, plus sports, social groups and hobbies allcontribute to a successfully educated person. but that is just in a utopian sense..... there are many people without university or college degrees making 6 digit salaries at young ages all because of their stronger mentality with reality.... and there are many university graduates cleaning gutters for a living as well..... figure that one out. |

in my opinion.. i think there's a difference between being educated and being knowledgeable... people who knowledgeable may be full of useful (or useless) facts and tidbits but they might not be educated
an educated person should be able to apply their knowledge to real life or different situations example: a student studies the exact way to do a certain problem but when presented with a different problem he/she croaks john 2899131 |
