Wasn't too packed when I went but it was still early cuz I was working yesterday. But yeah, 46% is bloody huge, especially for a non-election. From what I heard yesterday its considered a big YES even tho they said they were hoping for 75% in favour. It seems any city that's ever had a vote has always said no, and we've got nearly 2 yes votes for each no vote - so it seems to be a big plus.

Bottom line is that 64% is a majority. I'm glad it turned out that the YES vote won.
I was more than a little pissed when I realized yoou had to live in Vancouver to vote. This vote should have been a Lower Mainland vote at the very least.... it'll affect the entire area. Hell they plan on building one of the venues up at SFU in Burnaby but Us Burnaby folk weren't allowed to vote. BS if you ask me. As for whether or not we'll get the games thats really is up to the IOC now. The question is whether they feel that 64% community support is enough for this city to host the games... some say that it isn't. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed...... |

I don't know why they had this stupid vote, actually. It won't help in the decision for the IOC. They're going to chose whoever they want to. Money waster? I think so.
And yes, if they're going to have a vote for the olympics in whistler/van, they should allow all of the lower mainland to vote, as we're all going to be affected by the olympics. |

I mentioned this earlier - the reason only Vancouver voted was because Larry Campbell made it an election promise during the mayorial campaign. In other municipalities it was never an issue, hence no votes elsewhere. If people in these areas wanted a vote, they should have tried to make it an election issue.
That said, since lots of the $$$ is from the federal government, you could argue that the whole country should vote. |

Des it would make sense though, that if the commity was stuck between one place and annother.. and one place had more people saying yes they wanted the olympics, that that would probably be a bonus for the city with more yes votes.
Am i the only one that doesn't want them coming here? I'm sure it would be neat to be so close to the olympics, it's a once in a lifetime chance blah blah. But supposidly we are almost guaranteed to lose money. And the only point I've heard that made any sense was that it would be a great chance to show the world how great Vancouver is. BUT they allready know! We have whistler for christs sakes, people allready come from allover the world to see vancouver. I think we should take care of the homeless and our education & health system, before we possibly blow millions of dollars on the freaking Olympics. At least this is what I thnk, from what I've heard on the matter (which probably isn't enough to make a completely informed opinion but oh well.) |

You assume that the money would go to other things, which I doubt that it would.
Aside from that, prioritizing spending is difficult - who's to say that they government shouldn't tax all your disposable income away - after all, all the above mentioned goals are more worthy than going to a rave or renting a movie or doing whatever it is you do with your non-rent/food/clothing/etc. cash. I thought it interesting that the No campaign had no official support or funding from any major unions - you would think that, as an example, more health care money would yield the potential for either higher nurse's wages, or the hiring of more nurses (=more union members). But nary a peep was heard, least not that I can recall. |

^^^Yes, because we are legally obligated to do so - the agreements were signed long ago back when we decided to enter into the fray of bidding to host the games (which is when we should have done all this stuff, IMO). But they knew that we would likely not be awarded the games if we did vote no, so it really was a moot point.
