Breat Beat, Hip Hop Cafe Poll

A couple of people I know are planning to start a new cafe/juice bar/hangout type of place. The place will be based solely on underground hip hop/break beats/jungle/drum and bass/ and house vibes with live dj's spinning daily, and guest dj's in on weekends playing sets til the late hours. This place will be open from 11am til midnight on weekdays, and then from 11am til (as late as they will let us stay opened). this place will serve all sorts of munchies, sandwiches, pizza, etc etc.

So, any ideas that you people can throw to us, for more suggestions, local dj's, suggestions on decorating, ANYTHING like that, just post it on here..

Thanks a lot.

Location Location Location.
If you are planning on opening up in chilliwack don't look for people from Vancouver to show up

Are you charging people at the door? It wouldnt be smart since they can go downtown and see "great" djs in the same kind of atmosphere (add a lil liquor)

Most people go to coffe shops to talk and relax. Most people also think music with vulgar language or crazy raver sounds is annoying. The ideal music for coffe would be along the housier side of things Vocal, Deep, Tech House.

Your target audience im guessing is people who enjoy the sounds of "Jungle, breaks etc."(Note: alot of hip hop heads can't stand the sounds of "rave" music) unfortunateley that is a small percentage of Bc. The percentage that makes up that little scene im sure rather go to a club and see some damn good djs then visit a little shop to drink coffe and watch a bunch of mediocre djs.

In conclusion I would say go big or dont go at all.
Please dont take any offence to what I said it is my opinion and all in all I think its a failry good idea what you are doing. If pulled off right.

picture more of a blunt brothers type of atmosphere, but with ever so much better music. And it'll be most likely in the valley somewhere. It would be VERY difficult to infiltrate the vancouver market. but us valley people dont like driving an hour every time we wanna hear some good shit. so this would be more for the valley people.

i think its an awesome idea! main thing is its gotta be in a busy place like downtown to work (english bay would be PERFECT! or even near kits beach would be big pimpin). I can see a place like that going off in the summer if you get a dope looking patio, sweet looking juice bar and get a beach bar theme going.

and as for the music, during the day lay down some funkyass shit... deep soulful house with plenty of vocals and boogie... and hip hop always works anytime of the day. and maybe you can have a sunset guest dj (8-10pm?) come in and throw down a big dancefloor set (i guess you can alternate the genres every time and send out flyers about whos playing the sunset set) then cool it down, maybe set it at appitezers and liquor only (after 10pm) then have a closing set of the night 11-close?.. blah whatever i'm sure you guys got all that under control but i'd be down chillin at a place like that (maybe even drop a set :c-tard: )

good luck with that!

dj4mula is on a distinguished road
This sounds really interesting. A place where people can come in and have a coffee or a light meal and listen to a LIVE DJ. But Matty is right, location is a key issue. Downtown Van is expensive. I personally would open it near Metrotown, but that's just me. :c-tard:

If you had a small dance floor that would be even better. There is a restaurant in Vancouver called Dv8. Very similiar idea except there more of a restaurant. New DJ's each night and very artsy atmosphere.

As for music genres, I would hope each day would be something different. It's time for Vancouver to listen to something else besides rnb. A Funky House night or Trance night would a change. A dance floor would be dope.

There is this restaurant in New York that has open tables. Even better eh?

Good luck, can't wait to see it happen.

thank k-pryde AND formula. You get the picture of what its gonna be, especially u k-pryde. And yeah I agree with ALL of you that location is going to be the key, and that is what we are working on continually right now. I would obviously have more relaxed stuff playing during the day, I'm not gonna have some 130bpm stuff playing during the day, but yeah, the music that would be played during the day would be more to set off a background sound, so it wouldnt be loud like in a club, only at night would we play harder, and louder stuff, because like you said, during the day its more a place to relax and meet up, smoke a fatty and come inside and munch out. But thanks for the input everyone, and keep it coming, we need as much input as possible, and I'm keeping track of all the names of everyone who has some constructive ideas, and I WONT forget those names once the place opens.

THANKS :smoke1:
