rip it, then encode it, then depending on how you encoded it you might be able to play it on a dvd player.

some players support vcd's, but vcd's are huge. divx is small, but only some specialty players will read a divx. on the plus side, both formats play just dandy on a computer.

first off you need a video capture card. once you've got one it's a fairly simple (if finicky) process not entirely unlike ripping and encoding cd audio into MP3's.

and yeh, you've got it exactly. vcd and divx are just better formats for video than mpeg. divx is actually based off the mpeg4 standard i think.

You can buy DVD-R drives now which let you burn DVDs the same way you would burn CDs. I think they're still pretty expensive and I hear theyre slow as hell.

umm.. if you have a dvd you're going to need a dvd drive in your computer to atleast read it..

if you have a dvd player for your tv, then yeah according to dfltr you'll need that video capture card.. however if you capture it that way i dont think the quality will be as good (i could be wrong)

but if you dont have either a dvd player for ur tv OR a dvd-rom for ur computer, then you're out of luck

most consumer capture cards will not work. There is copy protection on DVDs, just like how you can not record VCR to VCR.

hmmmm I don't have the info about DVD ripping software just yet but I have to learn soon for doing visuals and shit. But yea you should really use a dvd player on computer to rip a the mpeg2 file off of the DVD, and then using DivX software compress the file in to small AVI that you can burn to a CD-R or just leave on your computer

You said you dont have a dvd drive on your comp well its pretty hard to do then. unless u hook up your tv/dvd player to your comp you could do it but the quality wont be as sweet but good luck anyways OH and if u are planning to make a vcd plan way ahead it takes a LONG FUCKING time to make a vcd especially if your doing an entire dvd

Rip the DVD into .avi format, then convert to a Supervcd or VCD. All depends on the dvd player that you have. If its a progressive then most likely it can support SVCD, if not, most DVD players can play VCDs with no problem.

I've never managed to get an SVCD to play on my comp, but VCD's play fine. Either way, sammy is looking at several hours of encoding heh. Make sure you have alot of room on your computer ~6-7gb will be needed
