Vancouver ghettos
On my first day there, I was looking for Blunt Brothers which is on West Hastings but I had it backwards in my head and I was thinking it was on East Hastings so I walked down Main Street and turned right I came to the east-west line and didn't realize that was where I was so I asked someone if he knew where East Hastings was.
He said, "You're heading east on Hastings. This is Chinatown and this is the ghetto. This is pretty much East Hastings." I took a look around me as I walked another couple blocks east. It wasn't what I would consider ghetto. Just a bunch of old guys with beards and some pretty girls hiding in doorways and alleys smoking their weed. I realized I was going the wrong way and turned around and I passed that little section near Main Street where there lots of people covering half the sidewalk offering to sell you just about every type of drug there is. I started walking away fast but by the next day I wasn't scared as much anymore. I saw some other pretty crazy people at the first hostel I stayed at on Main Street and I left that place after the first day. One young punk rock looking guy I said hi to in the hallway was talking to me and I told him it was my first day in Vancouver and how happy I was to be there. He asked where I was from and I told him I'm from the US. "Don't tell people you're from the US." He said, "Just talk to them for a while and get to know them and tell them where you're from." He told me he couldn't tell I was American by my voice so I shouldn't tell people that right off. He was right because someone at the hostel threatened me and tried to take my bag when he found out where I was from. I saw some other parts of the ghetto too but I didn't find it scarry at all compared to American ghettos. The interesting thing was, it seems like in Vancouver, the more scarry people are some of the older guys with beards as opposed to in America where the younger people are scarry. At least that's the way I saw it. |

hahaha. I remembered taking the bus home from burnaby and getting off at Main in Hastings. I took the 135 and I didn't get off on time so they ended up dropping me off like a couple of blocks past main.
I was waiting to get off the bus and the driver says to me "wow! You're one brave girl! you're getting off here by yourself?? I'd be way too scared to do that! Are you some sort of veteran here??" I couldn't help but laugh. I mean seriously. these guys may look a little weird and fucked in the head, but they're harmless. I've encountered stranger people in the so-called "safe, west side area" than there. You could argue that I'm just naive... but personally I think a lot of people are just way too sheltered. --Joanne :P |

Of all places why would you stay in the ghetto
Hastings and Main is not just a ghetto but one of the worst ghettos' in North Amrica its really sad.....AIDS is huge down there....be careful there's cheap hostels closer to downtown on Pender and Seymour I believe AGROout |

Canada is tame, at least compared to some (not all) portions of the US. The Main & Hastings area has the nation's (not the province's, but the nation's) lowest income per capita, so it could be considered the poorest part of the country or the worst or our biggest ghetto (whichever derogatory term you care to use).
That said, I'm sure this would change if you could include monies generated from illegal activities...part of the reason I think some (not all) drugs should be legalized...so they can be taxed to the max just like other vices...and reduce what comes off my cheque as income tax...not to mention a lot of people who make all this untaxed income (not in the M&H area, but generally) benefit from many services such as medicare for free due to their non-taxed income...but I digress muchly and lengthily...can U tell that not many people call tech support @ 8:45 on a Friday night... |
