^ Lots of people in the South (developing world) do die from common virii, but most of these have been cured in the North, and it is merely a problem of education, welfare, and money. SARS is incredibly infectious and is affecting the more developed countries with such rapidity taht it is becoming of global concern. We have medicines here that may help prevent or treat SARS, so imagine what woudl happen if SARS were let loose in those countries where influenza IS killing people. Not to mention that influenza and other common infections have been around for a long time, this is a new virus that is infecting at a rate higher than most virii that we have seen before. So it is very important to find out more about it, and attempt to quarantine it. NOTE: SARS is suspected to be some combination of influenza like strains, including pneumococcal (sp?), and bronchial strains. However, it looks like it may be droplet infection as opposed to airbourne which lowers how contagious it potentially is. Essentially for the next few weeks avoid large crowds of people, close contact with people, be wary of people who appear to be sick especially if they have been to S.E. Asia recently (no not just HK). Im in Toronto and it has closed down all the major hospitals in the area, plus i live 2 blocks from Chinatown...fek. At least I have vaccinations against influenze, and pneumococcal strains, so I am hopefully a little protected.

All i have to say is......sure there is this "epidemic" or w/e it is but i find it funny how we just stray from one problem to another....the war goes on and everyone freaks out.....but then a virus cums out and everyone forgets about the war....we gotta learn to just stop fuckin with nature and stop fuckin with other people and life on this planet will get much better as we know it....everyone is too concerened about there own life....cum on people we are ravers we are supposed to do things for the good of others...im very sorry if i sound too preachy or sumpthing i just dont like seeing people hurt over reasons that could have very well been avoided........ohh yeah one more little PS Jap cum on know what kinda person wishes death apun someone...give me a break...learn to love dude

Oh I know it's dangerous, and I get what you're saying. What irritates me the most though is people going around freaking out about it. Especially in vancouver. Vancouver isn't even considered an infected area as of yet. There have been 1 or 2 cases of it. A few people who were suspected to have it have been quarantined. But people are going around freaking out like "Omg, I was walking past someone today and they coughed, IM GOING TO GET SICK AND DIE NOW" And what I'm trying to say is it's now about 75 people out of a 2200 or something. It's not good, but it's not alot. There's a low death rate with it, as of now. So there is no need to be all paranoid when you're living in an area that isn't even considered to be infected. I wouldn't dismiss it totally though, if you get sick. See a doctor just to be sure. But people are waaaaay to paranoid about this one thing. It's not the end of the world and we're not all going to die! Now if you're in Ontario, I'd be more worried of it, but not here in BC. It's not a big problem.. yet (if it will be at all) |

if it wasn't so serious, people in asia wouldn't all be wearing some sort of face mask
the yaohan incident is reported to be a rumour (by the news) the sun sui wah incident was probably reported in the chinese news but you are probably not chinese so u don't listen to chinese news. i'm sure the asian radio/tv stations would cover richmond 10x more thoroughly than ur average cbc/chek/cnn stuff who's so interested about THE FUCKIN WAR and nothing else apparently. u all already know jap hates all ur guts doesn't it make u laugh to see that he's actually putting in a post that somewhat has a concern for u ravers hahahaha hate hate and more hate flame on |

But I'm alot more likely to believe something from the WHO, before a newspaper. I've heard/read lots of weird things about SARS recently. But that doesn't mean I won't believe something in a newspaper. The whole death count is a different issue. You could've read 111, sure. But that could be over a different time span from the one that I got the count from. |

But it is serious.. for the people in asia at least. They have all reason to wear surgical masks, avoid public places, and be paranoid about it. I'm saying it's not that serious for us here. Yes, it is a risk, but a small one considering Vancouver is not even one of the affected areas. |

>ADVERTISEMENT< China admits wider spread of SARS 12 more deaths reported among inland provinces First cases found in Latin America and Israel ANN PERRY STAFF REPORTER The global death toll from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome jumped yesterday as China broke its silence and admitted it had more cases in more provinces than it had previously revealed. The South China Morning Post reported today that the first victims of the deadly illness were people in China's southern province of Guangdong who ate or handled wild game, confirming earlier reports linking the disease to ducks. China said it had 1,190 suspected cases through the end of March, and 46 deaths instead of the 34 it had admitted. Cases were reported in Guangxi, Hunan and Sichuan provinces as well as Guangdong for the first time. In total, the World Health Organization estimated that SARS has infected more than 2,200 people worldwide and killed an estimated 78. Brazil reported its first suspected case, which, if confirmed, would be the first in Latin America. Israel also reported its first suspected case. China agreed yesterday to let a team of WHO investigators visit the southern province of Guangdong, where the disease is believed to have started. The four-member international team, which will leave Beijing today, will take samples from suspected patients to help identify a culprit virus and assess how infectious and virulent it is. And, for the first time in its 55-year-history, WHO recommended that travellers avoid part of the world because of an infectious disease: Hong Kong and adjoining Guangdong province. . In the first public statement by a senior leader, Chinese Health Minister Zhang Wenkang said the outbreak was "under effective control." He said 80 per cent of those diagnosed with SARS have recovered. For weeks, U.N. agency officials have appealed for more co-operation from China. "Because the mainland is not sharing information ... the outbreak has been lengthened," Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council said in a recent report. Laboratories around the world are racing to come up with a test for SARS. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has issued two tests that health officials can give to patients with suspected SARS. Dr. Julie Gerberding, the director of the Atlanta-based centre, said until a large number of people are tested, no one can say whether the disease is caused by the main suspect — a coronavirus. But she said so far 400 healthy people had been tested for the virus, a previously unknown relative of one of the common cold viruses, and all had tested negative. Several patients with SARS have tested positive. "It is not yet proof. There are other viruses still under investigation," she said. In Toronto, Dr. Raymond Tellier of the Hospital for Sick Children, has developed a test that detects this new species of coronavirus. It is currently being used here. A top health expert in China told a newspaper the earliest SARS patients in Guangdong had close and continuous contact with chickens, ducks, pigeons and owls. "We will explore further if the disease was passed to human beings from wild animals. You know, Guangdong people like eating exotic animals and I don't find it a healthy practice," said Bi Shengli, a vice-director at the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. The earliest cases of the disease were traced to either chefs or bird vendors, Bi said. In Thailand yesterday, the government said it would turn back foreigners suspected of having SARS and would force those allowed in from affected countries to wear masks in public. In the Philippines, which has no confirmed cases, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo put in place a contingency plan — including air and seaport checks — to prevent an outbreak. Health officials in New Zealand urged indigenous Maori tribesmen to forgo their traditional "hongi" nose-rubbing greeting for visiting Chinese at a convention. In Hong Kong, the Roman Catholic Church ordered priests to wear masks during Communion and put wafers in the hands of the faithful rather than on the tongue. |
