god, i can't believe i'm replying to this... that's what i get for being raised by hippies out in the fucking boondocks though.
yes, a wiccan will almost always self-identify as a witch. the pejorative version of "witch" was created by - big surprise coming - the catholic church way back in the day. the old religions have been battling it out with the new ones ever since they decided they didn't like each other several thousand years ago. the snake is traditionally the symbol of a wise woman as well as deceipt. coincidence? no. there are a ton of other conflicting words and idols, almost all of which are a product of christian amalgamation tactics, which remain popular to this day. for example, compare the dates of modern christian holidays to those of old pagan holidays. both solstices and both equinoxes have overlapping christian holidays plus there's the big one: christmas. is it any surprise that christmas was moved from christ's actual birthday (closest modern estimate is june now) to the middle of winter? not at all when you look at the date that Saturnalia falls on. aaanyways, i'm way off topic now. but yes, a wiccan is a witch, a witch is a wiccan, and the only "evil witches" are disgruntled goth teens and characters in Disney movies. |

^ agreed. Wican's are also known as witches; I myself am not offended by being called a witch unless it was meant in the negative, stereotypical way. I usually don't mention that I am a "witch" (well.. used to be if you want to get technical. I still believe in the ways of wicca I just haven't practiced it in a while) on the down low because of the close minded reactions I've received in the past. I won't lie if I am asked directly, but if the topic doesn't come up I dont announce my religion.
Anyways, I've gone off topic as well. I think the only reason a wiccan would be offended by being called a witch is because of the stigma that can be attatched to the word. They may simply be attempting to justify the fact that they are not a cackling, green faced woman that flies on brooms, but are WICCANS Last edited by MistressSpankME; Apr 03, 03 at 04:55 PM. |

the wiccan religion is very contradictory, perhaps i find it to be this way because iw as raised a christian, how ever i have read a few books on wicca and there are certain aspects i agree with and certain aspects i do not agree with... exanpmle: the horned god, thats kinda sketchy. Ive had bad experiences because of my mothers past with wicca and stuff and ya its not cool at all, so yes id have to ay from my experiences that yes it is evil in some aspects and its good in some aspects

Of course it has its evil side. In the wrong hands magic can be a terrible thing. Thank god there's Karma.
I guess that is another thing that kind of skethes people out about the whole thing. The funny thing is I was raised a christian too.. almost forced in a way. At least when I was younger, I was basically forced to go to church. All this after a night of sceances and ceremonies heh. I'm still not allowed to do it in my house. I think my mother's experienced some bad aspects of it all as well. I guess you just have to know what you are doing and remember that whatever it is will come back 3 fold. People also have to realize that all "witches" aren't and they shouldn't make that assumption (I'm not talking about you Valerie, you realize both sides of the issue which most people don't even bother considering.) |
