that was someone using unproven theoretical ideas of using the magnetic field created around powerlines to carry data.

this involes using the actual current.

the two huge problems is the fact that the signals cant go through transformers, which means the tens of thousands of transformers in vancouver would have to be overhauled to include bridges for IP. doubtful that would happen.

also, aparently RF engineers have gone so crazily against the idea because it creates a LOT of signal pollution.

not really worth it, unless you are working with a new development of housing.

Leaving aside the fact that I work for Shaw, I've had better treatment from both the phone and cable (even back in the Rogers days, before I worked for them) companies than I ever did from BC Hydro...

dumb kids have no idea how we probably have the cheapest and fastest broadband in north america. probably some of the best broadband in the world that isn't government subsidized.

so true... even worse is BCGas.

i don't mind shaw because i rarely hit their bandwidth cap. if i still had my fileserver up i'm sure i'd bitch, however pathetic that would be... "what do you mean you want me to pay for bandwidth? not fair!". bah.

and Rawb, the wired article mentions the trouble with transformers ;)

the signal pollution is just... ugh. enough electron mud flies out of powerlines already, just look at the number of kids with cancer that live under powerlines. more? no thanks.
