i use winamp 3... it only hogs resources, during startup - which is thanks to a better audio engine. winamp 2 sounds like ass. if you really don't like winamp 3, use Sonique or the Sonique 2 alpha.
the new UI is fully documented, you just have to find the file (exactly the way Sonique has always been... god i hated that). it's actually way better once you figure it out, it's just not for the faint of heart... you actually have to know your way around. by the way, there's only one skin that everyone uses for winamp 3, it's called MMD3. any other skin is a waste of time. |

have you ever used winmedia9?
its fantasic. and yeah I just said fantastic. minimnize into a mini control bar next to my taskbar. winamp to that? nope. haha, my songs just changed and a mini popup (like users online in msn) just popped up to tell me the next track. auto-playlists, it builds lists of my most listened to music on weekdays, weekends, nights, ect. winamp? nope. MUCH easier playlist control (mind you, winamp3 playlist control is pretty good) advanced tag editor, built in skin/color changer, sort by genre/ artist/ album, simple search, burn to cd, radio tuner, I could go on. dont knock what you havent given a chance. geez, winmedia is sick, and I had my doubts but give it a week.. you'll never go back. |

^^ it's also got the most aggressive DRM in history built into it. i will never install windows media 9 on any computer i own. i paid for it, it's mine, period. just say no to digital rights management.
plus like i said, winamp3 can do more than any other player, you just have to know how to do it. get the MMD3 skin, then put it in winshade mode. i usually use vertical winshade, but you might like horizontal winshade better. voila, not only a tiny control bar but a fully customizable one with different display modes. and yes, winamp3 also has searching, tag tweaking, skin/color changing, and advanced sorting, with the added bonus of not having microsoft and all the major labels peering over your shoulder 24/7. |
