It is an interessting conversation because - yes, we would all like to believe a word is a word and it's intent that matters, but that's not true.
It is a word that still has power, a word that was used to degrade one race by another, and Yes it is used by many rappers and such, because they are taking the word back - they are making it theirs so that it's no longer a weapon in the hands of others. Much the way fag is for many homosexuals. The word needs to be reappropriated by the black community - I liken it a little to the ho bashing gangsta rap, it can be terribley offensive, but a lot of women sing along and make it their own. Some poeple view that as propetuating the problem, while I see it as empowering. I think this is the same wit th the n-word,white folks use it and it is hateful, Tupac uses it and it's empowering - it may not be the best route for empowerment, but hey... And it's used within the black community with hatred too - like Bitch, it can be both a bad and a good thing - but that doesn't mean I want someone adressing me as a bitch, even though my girlfirends do - Sure people of all colors might sing along to whatever lyrics they hear, but how many of those same people would sing them if they had a person of color in their car that they didn't know? I too had noticed her signature, and I knew where it was from - but that word is still is full of hate - that word is still being used, in fact just days ago in a Seattle classroom to belittle people - to give one a sense of power over another simply based on the color of skin I am sure Courtney was only trying to showcase off a part of a favorite song and meant no harm, but I think Ash is wrong it's because it's not the forties that this word is a problem on a public message board, even when meant in a non-offensive way So, thanks Court for changin' your sig :) |
