The End of the World?

So there always seems to be this endless stream of predictions about the world suffering a huge catastrophe and ending... yet it hasn't happened after many, many such predictions. So what I want to know is what you all think, is it going to happen any time soon and if so how? It seems to me that if this does happen it'll likely be brought on by our own doing though mass disease, environmental destruction or of course the nukes.

So what will it be?

Oops I meant a huge commet...

I vote environmental destruction. There's currently already evidence to suggest that global warming could cause the next ice age by melting the polar ice caps and lowering the overall temperature of the oceans causing much colder weather globaly.

i think ice age as well, but it will take longer then a 1000 years, right now we are in a natural warming periode (granted its made alittle bit warmer cause of pollution) but we are still on the up rise for warming. then naturally we'll get cold again and go back into an iceage.
boo-yah.

the more we melt our glaciers and polar ice caps, the more that the oceans currents get disrupted, both the ones that go north, east, south and west, but also the ones that go up and down. this will bring the next ice age soon, as all that melted water is hella cold.
boo-yah yourself.

In all seriousness I think some radical faction is going to get their hands on a nuke, the US finds out, goes to hunt them down and since the racial faction has nothing to lose they decide to light up the device and take a whole bunch of us out at the same time.

It is human stupidity the scares me more than global warming, diseases and everything else that can possibly go wrong.

If you are religious or not one can view the new diseases (AIDS, SARS, West Nile, etc) as poplulation control. There are countries out there that decide they'll just fuck away with reckless abandon and populate this world when resources are getting tight in certain areas.

I pity the children born into those parts of the world as they are subject to poverty, hunger, pain and things I don't wish upon anyone.

Global warming is going to happen whether we like it or not. I don't care about the clampdown on pollution or greenhouse gases... the day we still have more vehicles being bought and on the road the more this global warming effect will happen. Humans are lazy and greedy by nature and will take the shortcut to make the fast buck and we all pay in the long run.

It is sorry to know that I will probably be dead before I see the consequences of the actions the last couple of generations have had on this world.

But before Earth turns into Waterworld, before the machines take over and Skynet it up, before the next bout of the plague I do think some moron will blow up a nuke, fuck up the atomosphere and we'll slowly wither away and die.

But there is one good thing coming!

GO DUCKS GO!!!!

Well asides from a massive commet or astroid crushing the earth the rest of those options would simply destroy life on earth not the planet its self. Then for the next x billion years there would be nothing but gases swirling till it some how all starts over again.

I could see that happening but I think you're underestimating the power of natural forces. An anology I've heard for it is to think of the earth as a fish tank. What's happened at this point is of the say 100 gold fish 1 has died causing a bit of concern. The thing though about an isolated environment is that an indicator like one dead fish is just that, it's likely if untreated that whatever disease got the one will kill the others in very short order. In this case we have all kinds of incators that the earth is in trouble and many scientests predict that the problems we face will accelerate very fast.

I forget the exact amount but as I recal if the ocean was to rise something like 5 feet 90% of the earths population would be submerged in water...

I'm not underestimating the power of Mother Nature. I snubbed my nose at her once a few years ago and she almost made me pay with my life.

I just bow to the power of human stupidity.

That's all.

I think theres very VERY little chance of a nuclear winter ever happening, atleast anytime soon. People dont seem to realize that it takes a shitload, and I mean a SHITLOAD of nukes to force a nuclear winter. It was possible back in the cold war when Russia and the US had thousands of nukes aimed at each other.

Also those were the hydrogen bombs, which is way harder to produce than your normal atom bomb, so it's highly unlikely any rogue nation will ever get their hands on one of those.

Sure a couple hundred warheads fired back and forth between India and Pakistan (which I can see happening) or in Southeast Asia(N. Korea) will cost millions of lives in the region, which while it would be an enormous tragedy, it wont really affect us.

I can also see any virus, even something as deadly as a say airborn ebola, become evntually contained, so I cant see that wiping us out.

The only one that truly scares me in terms of total extinction right now is the gigantic comet/meteor collision...
