How do you buy things? With money most likely, and where do most people get money from? Working probably.... so in a sense, you are putting in effort for what you get a person. And those little "pre-planned events" cost money too. I'm not a fan of giving material possessions to make up for the stupidity of a person, but it's the thought that counts. The best gift I ever got was when someone wrote and sang me a song, but that's old business.
