My mom is a pro bargain hunter. She's been doing this for years now...and before I got my car and I would get my mom to drive me around everywhere, I would have to tag along with her on her bargain hunts.
Best place to find garage/moving sales is to look in your local paper. The people who advertise their garage sales in the paper usually take the time and care to have a proper sale (ie. meaning they don't have total crap and just chuck it on their lawn). Moving sales are usually filled with furniture and better kwality stuff, but they're a bit more expensive depending where you go. Garage sales usually have everything, but there's a lot of crap in there too.
Surrey has crap garage sales, sorry surreylings! Vancouver has nice stuff, but people charge waaay too much for their crap. Burnaby/New West is where it's at. :D
Best grab at a Garage sale for me : Perfect condition scanner, $20
other stuff includes a pimpass keyboard (using right now) that has all these extra special buttons on the side that I never use, but they're there nonetheless ($5), lots of cool old games for PC, and my mom even bought our piano from a moving sale (1G).
One thing I won't do is buy clothes from a garage sale. It's just...no I can't do it.
Just a little plug here, but the place where I work (townhouse complex) is having a multi family garage sale on Saturday, June 21 from 9am - 12pm. It's located @ Marine Drive & Jellicoe (it's near Boundary, by the river. Jus keep going right from marine past boundary and you should see Jellicoe eventually) and the place is called the "Boardwalk".
I'll be workin at that time as well :) but I'll probably be doing some looking around first :D dibs for me!!!
