^ I'm sorry, but being afraid of needles is a selfish reason to not donate blood.
I'm sure the people suffering with various illnesses, serious injuries etc. didn't chose to be in the situation they are in and are most likely poked and prodded with more than just a needle or two. I'm not a huge fan of blood being extracted from me but I will be donating (more than once) without a second thought. Susan, don't you have peircings? I know you, and as far as I know you are a caring and smart enough person to realize that it is not fair to face your fear of needles for personal gain. Peircings and tattoos are insignificant when put into consideration how much blood is in need and how important it really is. On a related note, some of you might want to look into becoming an organ donor as well. It may seem creepy or invasive to some people; but again, it's only selfish to keep something that you obviously won't be using after you are dead and that could/will save someones life. (Unless you have something like religious problems with the post-mordom removal of your ogans) |

First off, A message board is meant for conversation, debate etc, so there is no reason for you to get so upset by me voicing my opinion. Specifically this once, considering the importance of the subject, (in comparison to something with every little importance such as your appearance or the music you listen to) and the polite manner I stated it. Secondly, I know you can and will do whatever you want with your blood. I never ordered you to go and donate blood. I simply stated my opinion in hopes that someone like you might realize the severity and importance of donating blood, far outweighs the fear of a tiny nedle prick. If there was a sufficiant supply for the people who needed it then it wouldn't be such a bad thing to not donate due to a fear of needles. BUT, considering how it is desperately in need (as far as I know from what I've heard/read on the subject). If an irrational fear is the only thing stopping you from easily giving something that is needed sooo badly, then being either selfish/inconsiderate/naive/ignorant, seems to be the only reason that, in my mind and most likely others, can explain not doing something as simple as taking a blood test or getting a vaccination that could/will save someones life. This person might even be a parent, sibling, friend or anyone else that you or other people care for. I guess I overestimated your mental/emotional capacity, so I apologize for assuming that you might have some compassion or understanding after being presented with the facts. In that case, it's not me that you need to blame for your angered reaction. |

About your stretched peircings, if they are properly healed and there is no open wound (which i'm guessing it is if you're stretching your peircings) I don't think there is any risk of catching something that they would have to worry about. Unless, for some reason, youve re-opened the flesh or anything. I don't know much about stretching so asking someone who does is probably a better idea than listening to me :P But I'm guessing if everything is healed, jewelery is yours/sanitized, and you ahvent re-opened anything I don't see any problem but you might want to mention it when asked about peircings. Oh and I'll go with you to donate in a few days if you want! |

I would love to donate. I'm one of the little population who actually LIKES getting needles. Yes. I am strange. But the piercing thing comes in as a factor. I am definately going to donate as soon as I am able to though. I've tried a few times, but they won't let me yet.

Well I've straeched 4 piercing in my ear in the past few days and only one managed to bleed the stupid peice of shit.. but it the one hole that is stubborn.. theres always that one.. but it should heal in a few days.. hey, today the scabs of it fell off :P
Jenna, I'm down for going and donating blood! Though I have a fear of needles I will do it.. heck I've ogne for a blood test before and they took a few/couple viles from me.. and its wasnt soo bad.. just the prick is what you fear.. though.. I bet if ther wasnt a well know fact that most people fear needles other people wouldknt fear it. and hell if I can get peircings wuts the diffrence? you get peirced with a needle. for both things.. then for the a peicing the take the needle out and replace it with a hoop or a stud. for donating blood you keep the same needle in you for a bit and give blood. to me the donating blood part is less painful. I just hope I'm able to doneate! When your ready Jenna, I am!:) [excuse my some what drunken typing!] |

That reminds me.. you have to help me start to stretch my ears now that summers here yay!
As I said, if it's healed it probably shouldn't be a problem, just make sure you mention it and the person interviewing you will decide. And I agree with what you said. All that stuff is the same, if not worse (needles for peircings are much bigger and intimidating for me at least :P). I get a little nervous about the prick, but then I always realize that it really doesn't hurt at all. What bugs me is the actual extraction of the blood haha, I'm just paranoid about fainting though. Getting shots has always seemed to be a big, scary deal, I think alot of people hype it up more than needed. I know I do. I remember getting vaccinations in school and peope were freaking out and others were trying to freak everyone out even more haha. I'm sure that doesn't help. How about we plan to go sometime next week maybe, and see who else wants to come. The site is in vancouver somewhere, hopefully we can figure out how to get to it :P |

To some people, needles are more than just some small fear they have. Maybe to some they are, but not all. I sure don't like needles, but i'm not exactly afraid of them. I just don't like the feeling of blood being drawn out of me, but that wouldn't stop me from giving blood (if i even could). that's just a weird, creepy feeling. But anyways, not everyone's fears are so small to them. Sure the fear of needles maybe a common fear, but there are those who have a great problem with it. Like me and spiders for example.. I have the biggest fear of spiders. I don't quite know why, but it's there, and it's very apparent. And it gets quite frustrating when people say "oh it's just a spider, relax". it's not that easy for some and most people don't seem to understand that unless they have a fear of their own to that same degree.
i'm not saying this is the situation for the people in this thread who are afraid of needles.. i don't know them so i can't say, but it could very well be for them or anyone else. so don't be so quick to blame them for being selfish.. sometimes it's beyond their control. |
