Computer Problems
I'm using my old comp right now cause my other one won't start up. When I try to boot it, before it reaches the Windows XP page, it says that it's missing a file and won't start up as a result of that. It said that I could try to restore the file by putting in the CD-rom and pressing 'r', but I don't even know how to get it to load the CD.
Bahhhhhhhhhhh. Is something like this fixable on my own or will I have to hash out a wallet and a half and bring it into the store? HELP! :soak: |

Hey..it is missing a system file and you will need to run the repair option on the Retail copy of XP....If you own like a dell or an hp and they have "recovery" Cd it will not work. you either looking at going out the microsoft site and getting the 7 boot disks that take 2 hours to boot from and tehn running a list of commands through the dos repair console or Recoverying the notebook.
Thats right. Wipe it clean and reinstall EVERYTHING>>>booh. Or I would suggest to find a local guy...someone smalll in the computer industry and get them to come out pay the 20 bucks to run the repair from a retail xp cd that they have...... or the other alternative. Rip Xp off the net.[ Burn Pirate steal] and boto to it... Ok wait you said you can't boot to the Cdrom. you should be booting from the cdrom automatically. is it a desktop or is it notebook. Do you know how to get into the bios? You should be able to change the boot sequence in the boot menu in the bios. Cheers. |

hehe. yup. i'm back in van til the end of the summer.
DAMNNNNNNNNNNN. okay, so i changed the boot order to CD-Rom and it didn't work. before it even goes to the windows XP page, it goes to a black screen that says: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original setup CD-Rom. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. And like I said, I tried loading the CD, but it won't even do that. Any more suggestions? |

if the latter, it'd suggest the whole directory is fucked. which is really really odd. had you done a virus scan lately? could be a virus. or dropped your computer from a large height? it might also be a damaged harddrive. if it is just a few files, though, list them. you might be able to get them onto a floppy, and then copy them from there. if not, nuke the fucking thing. |

sigh inkster...i think it's time to nuke the fucking thing.
it just said \system, nothing else. i had this problem once before (a long time ago) and i had to wipe and do a complete reinstall. it was still under warantee though so i brought it into the shop and they did it for me. crossing my fingers that akeel can work his magic! :P |

I was having that same problem earlier today (only it was a specific file, not the whole system directory) but that was because of faulty ram. i took it from my dad's comp and his was all fuckered last week like yours was. i don't know if there's any connection here, but i felt like mentioning it.
good luck with the comp erica =) |

do you have more than 1 cd rom drive? its either you have 2 cd rom drives and the one you're trying to boot off of is the slave drive, OR when your machine was built they made your cd rom drive the slave drive.... in either case this is probably why its not booting...
if this ISNT the case, then you probably didnt setup the boot squence properly john 2899131 |
