Vbb is only $160 for an owned liscence, and access to upgrades/hacks only cost $30 a year thereafter,... it's not particularly expensive.

we want additions like hivemail to create personal email, renew our photopost licence for new software updates, the new vbulletin is coming out and we need to renew for another year on that. in additon our new dedicated server boasts hefty space and faster speed, thats certainly not cheap over $150/m.

I don't think I need to debate the costs of running a large website, that isnt the question at hand. costs are high, and to expand on this site it does cost money. paid memberships, even selling 10 or 20, would pay for a large portion of these.

I would pay the proposed amount even without all of the extra add-ons you listed. I think that the F&K team deserves some credit, in the pocket and out, for the work you guys have put into this site and for giving us a place to share our thoughts. You've formed a community, and I think it's time for this "community" to give back.

If not a lot of people are 'for' the idea of paid memberships, you could always have some sort of fundraiser or donation-collecting once a year...

You guys are doing a great service and I hope you come up with a way to be able to do it and not pay for it out of your own pocket anymore.

While this would probably hurt my pocketbook more than anyone else's (lolz. :D ) , my suggestion to you would be to DITCH the subscriber forums and ding PROMOTERS $10.00 per month to post promotions in the promo section and restrict any replies or posts to those who paid the fee, while being brutually vigilant against people who post in the wrong section (insta-delete). People could request special favours for free parties if they bump the F&K name on the flyer.

I dont know how other promoters feel, but you'd definitely have my money.

it's a good idea, but isn't that what the banner ads are for? aside from that, keeping all the promos in one section and not in flashed banner ads every where i look is definately a Good Thing. it also creates a way for the smaller parties, that can't scrape up enough for a banner, to pay a bit into the hat. though, i fear some promo companies will cheap-out, and the section might not be as thorough as it is right now. but, i guess that's their loss.

you mean www.slsk.org? it does a fairly good job of releasing tracks before they're officially released. then there's mchammered's ftp which does sort of the same thing, and is very much associated with the site. we certainly can't forget kris's server, either.

it'd be hard to make this much of a draw to paid memberships unless the tracks were exclusive to the site. they'd also have to be of amazing quality since no one is going to pay money for some kid's frooty loops experiment. however, if it were touted as 'just another great feature', and not as a major feature, it might serve some purpose. unfortunately, it'd probably eat up the bandwidth quicker than the membership fees would allow.

Of course, 30 seconds after a paid member downloads it he sends it to all the 'regular' users he knows...

On special, 'Members Only', boards...I agree that it has the potential to turn the non-member boards into 'fluff'...which sadly would mean that fewer and fewer 'new' members would join since they would be basing their decision on garbage content (as opposed to those currently using the boards and familiar with the level of discussion the community is capable of).

That said, perhaps an area of the member's only section could provide the details of parties that are 'less than legal'...since the info would likely still disseminate to non-members except for the newest of newbies...and the restricted access may help delay if not prevent the arrival of the boys in blue to shut things down...

A thought on letting members change their handles at will...may also want to include a feature where their old handle isn't available to be taken by anyone else for a month? A year? Something else? So that peeps not aware of the change don't send messages to the wrong person, and also so that the original owner of the handle can change their mind within a certain timeframe.

Final thought is on payment. Since so many peeps on this site are a little before their days of flagrant consumption beyond their means, many won't have credit cards (luckily I'm full into my consumption-whore phase of life). Although most of their parent's will have credit cards, I wonder how many parents would want to be paying for this (not to mention kids whose parents don't know they rave, etc.

cyberdog- That wasn't really what I was implying...I was thinking something along the lines of collecting/raising money within our 'F&K community' from those who are willing to part with a few dollars. I'm sure that our actual societal community would not be willing to support such a -worthy- cause as to keep a rave message board running.
