Fnk Revealed: Q&A - Rumor-mill pt. 1
Huggermugger!
Here’s a little a little insight as to what goes on behind the scenes @ form-kaos.com.
First off, as many people have gathered, we consist of a core group of everyday people. I won’t go into crazy detail but soon enough you’ll meet the creators and people behind f&k in our highly anticipated "about section" coming soon.
Our next big announcement is the upcoming launch of FNK.CA, a new stylish 6.0 revamp due for release this autumn. Keep checking back for new updates and our projected completion date.
The next section is a little bit of history behind f&k and also answers the questions I’m constantly being asked. Hopefully you’ll learn a few things you didn’t know and also be able to extract a few thoughts from the following Q&A period.
Q: What is/who are form & kaos? Why the name?
A: Originally we started out like every other dj in this city. We bought records, turntables and mixers and started practicing like mad until we got our shit together. Once that was done we began playing around the city (mostly at house parties) as Lex Luther and Billy The Kid. Pretty damn funny considering we were noobs in the city and weren’t really thinking about anything long term. After a while the bigger shows came in and we decided that a proper name was long overdue. That’s when we came up with Form & Kaos and decided to work with that name and get more professional about everything. Soon after we developed a name for ourselves we decided it was time to hop on the .com wagon and get a personal website done. It had the usual features any other site had but it really had nothing to offer. No content in fact. We discovered that the self promotion was effective but really limited us to what we wanted to do. Hence the new release of form-kaos.com which crossed almost every barrier of an egocentric website. The name Form & Kaos originally represented our playing styles and personalities. I was known for the mixing and Kaos was known for laying down hip hop induced cuts, scratching and crafty turntablism. Nowadays we feel it represents two parts of society, one being the law abiding, rule following relaxed lifestyle and the other being a darker less than angel type mentality. It also depicts the everyday struggle between good and evil, light and dark, Yin and Yang and of course form & Chaos.
Q: Who funds the site? How much could it possibly cost?
A: For the longest time we rationed monies from paid gigs. If times were slow, we gladly sacrificed our pay checks to fund the site so we could ensure longevity. Lately, expansion has occurred and we now negotiate with several key sponsors to help with rising costs. Typical annual costs will venture well into the thousands this year as we now exceed the 70 GB up/down monthly transfer rate.
Q: What is this site all about?
A: Think of it as a giant circle of friends and connections. It’s a place to post your thoughts, and place to find out about upcoming events. Whatever your purpose for visiting you should find something worth reading.
Q: I’m new, what could I post? I don’t know anybody here.
A: Just be yourself, you’ve probably got a lot more to offer than you think.
Q: Who knows about form-kaos.com and it is just for people in Vancouver.?
A: Surprisingly enough we have repeat visitors from all over Canada, parts of the US, various cities in the UK and an interesting amount of users from different parts of Europe. So to say it’s only visited by locals would be like saying war only occurs in the Middle East.
Q: Where is form-kaos.com headed and what can I expect as a member?
A: Obviously we’re determined to make this site as enjoyable as possible and we’re constantly brainstorming new ideas. You’ll be seeing some radical changes once our new server is installed. Not only is our space increased by 10, we’ll also be able to handle a much larger load of users and also offer many things that are not currently possible.
Q: I’m a dj, I need some ideas on getting myself booked.
A: Remember the ABC’s and D’s of djing:
Attitude – Leave it at home. Nobody appreciates a cocky loud mouthed know it all. Present yourself with confidence and loyalty.
Beats – Do you have every mix every other dj has? Or are you willing to research artists and find out what mixes they’ve done previously? Having a collection of quality records will help you get booked and will also separate you from the rest of the pack.
Charisma/Confidence – Are you ready to perform live? Have you put enough time into your work and do you think you have an act people will catch onto?
Discipline/Dedication/Demos – Are you willing to put forth the effort of maintaining a dj lifestyle? Will you freak out if you train wreck? Keeping your thoughts to yourself will avoid any politics when it comes to future bookings. You might think you’re better but are you willing to prove it? Always pack a demo of your latest work as it will offer the promoter some solid material of what you’re all about.
The abc’s go on and on and I could spend the next 45 mins writing about it. I’m not going to preach so if you have any more questions feel free to contact me personally. Demos are highly recommended and I will take the time to review your CD with the utmost respect and criticism.
Q: Can you book me?
A: Since the beginning, fnk has always put emphasis on bringing new talent out of the shadows and into the limelight.. We’ve helped countless dj’s get their first gig and have offered our help the entire way through. It’s difficult to break into the scene and most give up before rising to their full potential. You can ask any one of us about what It takes to become a dj. We’ll offer as much help as we can via the forums. As for all the other EXPERTS on here you're outta luck ;)
Q: I've noticed some big names appearing on the main page of the website, is this going to be a regular feature? Does fnk have any plans for future events?
A: Absolutely! We intend on making it a monthly read so you can learn more about some of the acts arriving in Vancouver. We also love it when they give us signed autographed copies of their latest work which eventually will find its way into the crates of local dj's. See the contest section for giveaways. Fnk does have a few aces hidden up the sleeve in terms of SITE-RELATED events much bigger than any we've ever done. Stay tuned for information on F&K's first BIG party.
