Telus ADSL vs Shaw Cable
I've been trying for over two weeks now to get some kind of response from Shaw about their internet service. See I bought a modem last year so I don't need a new one or to rent one (which are their only opitons when you sign up online). I've sent three emails asking them what I should do and I've sat on the phone for a half hour before I hung up in frustration.
Now I'm thinking about getting ADSL (which is what we have at work) because I need the net at home and Shaw blows. ADSL is $16.95/mth and Shaw Cable is $29.95... so that's like $15 I could be saving. Who has what service and what do you prefer?? |

I have ADSL, and I hadnt had any problems up until last week, and my internet is STILL FUCKING DOWN!!! Their customer service sucks and they don't want to come and deal with their problems... but like I said, it was all good up until then...
The speeds that you get on ADSL depend on where in the world you are located, and how close you are to their service. So I would look into that before signing up... |

i've run 60 down and 40 up on this dsl connection on my computer alone. there were two others with cams being used probably about 8 hours a day, too. no calls. the previous month i ran about 40 down and 20 up. no calls.
i don't know if they're just incapable of monitoring throughput on their modems, or if they just don't care. |

I've used cable internet for years and years now with very little problems (that have been their fault)
Speed is very good but as always, depends on the website you are visiting/downloading from. Some website you can get 200-400 kb/s, other you get 5 kb/s As for restrictions, shaw is pretty much unlimited unless you're abusing it. =) I was running a warez dump site/ftp on my computer a few years ago and I got a call from shaw cuz I had used 80 gigs of upstream traffic in 72hrs.. heh heh |

personally I have used both, and I find telus adsl to be far superiour to the net nerd who can feel the speed difference. but there are faaaaaar to many problems assosiated with dsl, and telus isnt the best company to deal with ether. plus they have been cracking down on downstream usage and I was even threatened by an email to be fined if I went over my d/l limit again. so I switched to cable and I would have to say cable is the best over all. speeds are good, I find the net gamming better too, so im gunna stick with until I can get a 100/1000bit lan line :)

Thanx for the input guys!! After sitting on hold for ANOTHER half hour with Shaw I got re-hooked up with them. I thought it'd be kinda silly to go spend $69.95 (after rebate) on the Telus modem when I have a perfectly good cable modem at home. Plus over 6 months I'd only save like $80.
P.S.~ Damn you Winston and your ghetto ass editting ma poll =P |

Sorry babe... just had to put my entry in.
If one were to go with ADSL my friend tells me it is best to rent the modem from them instead of buying one. The reason is if (and when) they upgrade the network you get a new modem upgrade as well... also if anything goes wrong they fix it for free. If you own the modem they give you the runaround until you prove you have checked all the hardware on your side first. And most importantly... DO NOT buy the internal modem. Only way to reset it is to restart your PC. Now isn't that a pain in the ass. |

even though you've already gone with shaw, i'll still put my bit in.
i have adsl and i love it. no where near as many problems as with cable (except when my dad is playing around and screws things up, but that doesn't count) heh. and yes, the speed does depend on how far you live from there.. thing i don't know what it's called, but my house is pretty much as far as you can be from the station, and we still get good speed. better then anything we ever got with cable. their customer service isn't all that bad IF you know what you're talking about. if you're clueless when it comes to computers and the internet, then it'll be alot more frustrating. oh well, g'luck with the cable. |

i should probably menition that the telus quick connect setup is wonderfully easy to use. well, i guess it's just as easy as weth cable, in that you stick one thing into another thing. but with cable, you've got to have the extension going to the room that the modem's in. not everyone has coax running to the room in question, but they usually have a phone line in it. this also means that if you're too cheap to buy a hub, you can move the modem from room to room.
neat stuff. |

using adsl but there's always a problem with it every frikkin month, and I have to call in only to get a voice message sayin that there's a big problem in the greater vancouver area and to check back with them in another 2 hours, and 2 hours later it still isn't fixed.. it's real annoying when you need the comp for research or to finish an online assignment for school.

personally, i prefer cable. if my ftp were busier, i'd be on adsl - though probably not by choice. telus caps are lame, so poop on that. but on the other hand, having shaw pull your service (as has happened to a few of my more zealously trading friends) is considerably more lame. so basically my two cents is if you want to be able to ream your connection like a roofie'd barslut, go with telus. for more moderate usage and better speeds, go with shaw. |

Well, been using Shaw for a year now. While my dl speed is noticeably slower than some of my friends using Shaw in other places in the lower mainland (still way faster than dial-up tho), or using Telus, I have never ever had prolonged connectivity problems (there's the odd time where the service is reallly slow or down for 30mins~1hour, usually at some off-peak hour early early morning).

ADSL is good if you use the net a lot during peak hours. Plus you can subscribe to office class packages for more $$, getting guarunteed downstream throughput of up to 4.0 Mb depending on your package. Your upstream is restricted to 1.25 Mb on the highest package, costing $149 / mo. Most people get 1.5 Mb down and 856 kbps up.
Cable is better if you use the net a lot during off-peak hours. The upstream is terrible, 512Kbps in most places, over 800 in some, depending on how dense your neighborhood is and how many nutballs have their Kazaa filesharing enabled, it can drop through the floor. |

like it was said before, totally dependant on area. how many neighbours on your node can affect cable. telus has more variables, like line quality, distance from the local center, apartment buzzer systems... etc...
on average, i say cable is the 'safer' choice. if you know nothing about the area, more times than not, cable will be more reliable than adsl, because they have less service-quality affecting variables. adsl is great when it works well and horrible when it doesnt, if i could get great adsl i would choose it over cable.
