Good call god...but most of the threads in the forum are pointless. So post it up right?
I'm not a huge fan of microsoft...its just. I'm too friken lazy to look into the linux option. I guess I would be 'being smart' cause I'd actually have to use my brains. I guess I feel like I spent so much time learning how to fix microsoft and all their problems for customers and my mom and such that I just don't have the energy to learn what linux is all about.....I mean look at it this way.. The next post in here could be laughing and pointing at me because Linux is exactly like windows.....I wouldn't know. So I guess maybe its time....Where do you get Linux do you have to rip it or do you have to buy it or what? Borrow? Steal. hook me up man? (See your threads not totally pointless) |

makes sense. it's back up along with WU. it's kind of funny how nearly all the prominent articles on it are security related now, when a day or so ago there were only one or two small links. i guess they were expecting everyone to have been in their right minds and applied the patch? the page reflects the urgency now, anyways. in some cases, it's almost to a comical extent, with a subscript that seems to suggest the authors had 'HOLY SHIT' going through their minds while writing the articles. i can't even imagine what it's like in redmond right now. |

from a business standpoint, they're an amazing success. but from an end-users standpoint? Quote:
too bad it took them 20 years or so to learn. :) but yeah, xp and 2k are pretty nifty. Quote:
the software is just a tool. it is not an experience within itself. that being said, there are many comparable (often better) applications that match up to those of windows. - MSOffice has Microsoft Word, AbiWord, KOffice, StarOffice - MSNM, ICQ, AIM, Jabber (and so many more) has Gaim. - Norton Antivirus doesn't have an equivalent since it's nearly impossible to get a virus on linux. your average user doesn't have the permissions that would allow changes in the system. keep out of root when you don't have to be, and you're fine for the most part. there are more, of course. there's quite an extensive list of equivalencies online, but i can't find it right now. Quote:
the re-'learning' of the comparable programs is an irrelevancy. they're all menu/gui based and any who could figure out the windows program in the first place can figure out the gpl version of it. file-save as means the same thing anywhere you go. you have to also remember that people already do this all the time. ever seen someone use a mac for the first time or vice versa? they figure it out pretty quick. now, if you what you meant by that is all the adminning that one has to do, i'd suggest you go download a copy of mandrake. it's so completely easy to use that i'd be pretty confident in letting my mom install it. after a half hour of that, one's pretty much good to go. it's just that easy. if you don't want to mess around with things, you don't have to. and if you do, there's so much information to help you out you'll rarely walk away from a problem without a resolution. Quote:
however, if you like to tinker with things, and enjoy a mind boggling array of choice, then linux makes a pretty neat os. so in conclusion, to each their own. :) |

just an aside, to blame this on microsoft is pretty silly, anyone who's hit windows update in the last two months was patched. its more of a case of people that dont care about security than a company.
microsoft can identify the problem and fix it but it's up to the end user to help themselves. |

i'm a coder, and i still use Win2k for my desktop out of laziness. if i can find a copy of wine for my linux box to try shit out, things might change. for the moment though, i want my main computer to be a refuge of easiness... hacking linux and bsd is good, but not when you just want to get something goddamn done. |
