Art Courses
So so far I'm on the waiting list to enroll in one for the fall.. I'm gonna be in class with a bunch of 15 years olds. fun fun. and hopefully I can do another free program that erica suggested... in the spring..
I really need to find some GOOD art courses.. I took one from adult education last spring, and it was so crappy. I felt like I was in a matchmaking class for a bunch of old single men and women in their mid thirties or something. The course was very basic. Everything they taught you in art 8, and taught you again in art 8, 10 and 11. I want a course that's going to stimulate your creativity.. i don't want to do things that have already been done over and over.. , and I'm not exactly LOOKING FORWARD to working with a bunch of young'uns.. Where can I go that's a modest price, and is yet an excellent course? Despite the fact that I am self-taught, I really need guidance by some one who's had years of experience, and is VERY open minded as to what "Art" should be. My last art teacher was pretty narrow minded about such things. She was more of a technical artist than creaive. |

Well "art" is very open ended. So I'll just tell what I'm interested and found...
At Emily Carr there's contuing education courses... They seem way too expensive for what they're worth. I was interested in taking a cedar weaving course, but I can do that at any reserve for 1/2 the cost. The Roundhouse has the best local, moderately low costing, extensive 'art' courses. I highly reccomend the Roundhouse. I thought you lived in Surrey, but looking at your profile it says North Burnaby, I thought the Surrey Arts Centre may offer some courses if you want to check that out. Maybe check out Cont' Ed at Langara and Cap College too. Prolly pretty well priced, you get to use there space, tools, etc. |

the only 2 places i know are the arts umbrella and the emily carr continuing education courses (extremlyyy expensive).
im looking around for some outside courses/programs to take as well... from graphic design to painting courses. i want to get as much training as i can, so i can apply it to school... yoko if you find anything let me know please. |

if you ask me, i don't believe in art courses. I've seen graduates from design school that came out with the same skills they had when they enrolled into the program. They paid a lot of money and all they concluded with was a vast knowledge in history of art. You just CAN'T teach creativity in a school!
Keep up with the self teaching; That works the best. Practice, practice, practice! And if you need direction, you have the whole online community to assist you. I always believe that it's the people around you that makes an artist. (my opinion) .g |

^It's true that you can't TEACH any one to be creative, but what an art course certainly CAN offer is an atmosphere for you creativity to grow.
I find that self-teach can make you become narrow-minded, and your style becomes too monotone. I don't think you're going to succeed in anything thinking that your way is always right. I self-teach but there are certain things that I still DO still struggle with, and as much as I would like to correct the problem myself, I find that borrowing ideas from those who's strengths are in the area of my weaknesses will get me somewhere faster better than if I settled with what I thought was right. vesperstina.. haha do I fit the surrey girl stereotype or something? bummer. :moon: Yeah I heard about cap courses.. I might look into those for sure bebu. i'llet ya know if I do, but so far I only have arts umbrella. |

I am also looking for good art classes, I've taken sewing courses and seen other art classses going on in continuing education and I know exactly what you mean yoko*. I think I was the only person there under 30 who had ANY experience with either medium. I'm sure they have some great classes to offer, maybe the higher levels (if they have them), but if you find anything else I'd like to know as well. Luckily my uncle is an artist (he actually attended Emily Carr), hopefully he'll have time sometime soon to help me improve my painting skills (thats what I really need to work on, and what he is best at). He's very creative and FREE haha, and it will be one on one so that should benefit me greatly if I can ever snag him away from his family and job for long enough :P |

^^art careers 12 would probably be the best art class you can take in highschool..and it also depends on your teacher too. my teacher set up mandatory afterschool sessions where we'd learn a new technique and create a finish piece. that totally helped expand my portfolio and showed my diversity with different skills.
for all you making a portfolio.. take the time to learn details in how to present your portfolio and make it so that you're personally proud and happy about it. i still hate my portfolio with a passion.. and i hid it under the couch.. im starting a fresh portfolio right now and i want to attend some classes to help me as well. strange how vancouver lacks art courses.. i use to go to a family ran art class at someones house.. i learned sketching and watercolor skills.. but i wasn't too comfortable there. once the classes are good they're EXTREMLY expensive. hey jenna where did you take ure sewing classes? I WANNA LEARN TO SEW!... i can do basic sewing right nwo, but i wanna learn how to make an outfit etc. |
