for design a few things to remember.
ideally you need 2 drives. one for the os and for scratch disk. the major performance issues in illustrator/photoshop is going to be hard drive hits and filter processing. if you can reduce the amount of times programs are hitting one drive then you can speed up your work incredibly. scsi is ideal for your situation, but consumer level scsi solutions leave much to be desired. expensive solutions will double the purchase price fo your computer. depending on your cash at hand, many new designers are choosing an ide/seial-ide RAID 0 or 0+1 setup to speed up disk hits while being much, much cheaper than a raid setup. i wouldn't go with any disk larger than 80 gigs if i was doing intensive work on it. macs are great, but the day the mac ruled the design realm is pretty much over. the premium you spend going the mac route will not net you any superior tangible benefits equal to the money you payed. (though if you're getting a laptop, then the mac route is the way to go). mac or pc you're most likely going to have to pay someone to upgrade your box to new hard drives anyways. it all comes down to the amount of cash you have. if you have 7 grand why not get a pimped out mac. but you can get a really nicely built design pc for about 2k + monitor. |
