I have had a canon AE-1 for Five years and My dad had it for 15 years before me. the best camera I have ever played with. Change the lenses and filter. I had a zoom lens on it and a wide lens for Skateboard shots. I love that camera. Although the shutter started to freeze on me so I have to buy a new one.
The good thing is that they are pretty cheap now because they are reletivly old. Go here. http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography...rces/SLRs/ae1/ |

Sweet. You don't need an expensive camera.
My family has always been poor and we were always able to get our hands on that kin of stuff. Its not like 1000 dollar investment to start, buy 100 dollar use canon or Nikon at a pawn or an auction or the buy and sell and go shootin. |

yeah...if you're a beginner, i'd suggest getting your hands on a used manual slr. that's what i started with...a really old nikon and then i got a second canon slr and i used it up until this summer when i got a new cannon rebel TI. most of the photographs i take are made with a manual slr. and i also use my media format cambo camera (4x5 negs as opposed to basic 35mm). but cambo's are big heavy mother fuckers and kinda sketchy to start out with. my new canon rebel has a lot of modes...including a fully functional manual slr mode (which i always use). next summer i'm going to invest in a digital slr because we're getting a a DIGITAL LCD ENLARGER (so excited) at school...it'll be the only one in north america when we get it. i can't wait!
stick with a film based manual slr though...and once you get the hang of things, pick up a couple of lenses or filters. you can get tanks, reels, tongs, etc for pretty cheap if you know where to look. just phone around. black n white RC paper (ilford) is about 30 bucks for a pack of a 100...so it's pretty inexpensive. and film....if you really wanna get into photography, you can invest in a bulk film loader and just load your own film whenever you want into reuseable canisters. i think there's this misconception that old skool manual slr's are only good for black n white...but in reality that's not true. they take great colour shots but i'd reccomend investing in basic filters just to enhance colours. or you could even shoot with color slide film (what i shoot with) for more vibrant colours...but you have to have really balanced and consistent exposures and negatives for color slide film. but yeah...just get a used manual slr and shoot a bunch of rolls and see what you get. that's all you REALLY need i guess. you should have a built in reflective light meter in your slr to get your exposures correct...if your meter is fucked though, you might want to look into getting a hand held incident light meter that measures light hitting your subject as opposed to light being reflected off your subject. good luck! :) -s. |

oh and i'll let you in on a little secret:
if and when you decide to shoot...don't believe the film speed they have on the boxes of film you buy at stores. they lie!!! always divide the film speed by around 2. so if it says 400...i'd set my camera to 250...or just compensate and open up your aperture a bit more....cuz when they test the film in labs, they fuck it up cuz everyday lighting is different than lab conditions...and dividing your film speed by around 2 will give you the maximum light sensitivity...(ie. you'll get nicer pictures) -s. |

^^^^ if she's getting an used manual slr...and she wants to do long exposures...all she needs is a cheap cable release.
if you wanna take GOOD pictures and have fun with photos and really have CONTROL of your shot...then SLRs are the way to go...amateurs to professionals use SLRs in every situation BECAUSE they're so versatile in respect to what you can do with them. -s. |
