The internet is a wonderful teaching tool at times.

Spawned on as a result of a comment in the Sex and Drugs thread I started looking for more information and ended up finding this site http://www.wsu.edu/~dee/CHING/OPIUM.HTM

I am fascinated by Chinese history and have forgotten much about the Opium Wars that I was taught in high school.

It is a good read and gives insight to how the world was two centuries ago.
