conterfeit money: use it or lose it?
Do any of you take time to thoroughly INSPECT your change before you accept it? I never did, but now I now I'm definately going to be more careful.
A while ago, when I was looking at my 20$ bill, I noticed that the green ink looked slightly TOO green, and the paper felt "different" from other bills. When I looked at it carefully I noticed that there were miniscule smudge marks in the ink. I tried rubbing at the bill, and the ink SMUDGED. Knowing that if I were to report it to the bank, they would only confiscate it and I would have LOST money, I just crossed my fingers and managed to get rid of it at some other store. Just yesterday I was about to buy food at SHELL stn, and the guy at the counter was JUST refusing a 10$ bill from these teenage girls, saying that it was counterfeit. It's my turn in line and I put down my 10$ and he's like "Your bill is even worse than THEIRS". I thought he was just being smarty-pants so I ignored it and put down change instead. Later on, i go inspect my bill and I notice WATER BLOTCHES on my 10$ bill. The ink was faded and blurry, and the paper felt close to real paper, but not. Was pretty pisssed off, but somehow managed to get rid of it today. (i'm surpsied that I did) If you were to get a counterfeit bill, would you go the honest way, or would you chance it and use it? Also, does any one know what the "penalties" are (if there are any) for using a counterfeit bill whether or not you knew that it was? |

If you know it is counterfeit currency and you decide to use it then it is a criminal offence.
If you did not know it was counterfeit then they let you off. I do not know if you get reimbursed or not for turning the counterfeit money, I suspect not, but that is what you are supposed to do. |

Well, seeing that I don't usually inspect my bills unless they are big ones ($50 and $100), I would probably use it unknowingly. But if by chance I did notice it, I would still use it. I don't think it's fair to receive counterfeit money from a store (and especially from a bank machine!!) and then have it confiscated and lose the money.

I got a fake $10 bill once - tried to use it at Rogers and they took it from me and wouldn't give it back!! They said it was against the law to give it back knowing it was a fake. The person who gave it to me gave me the money back though - which was super of them!! :)

1 of my friends once made the old fake $20's you know the one without the hologram and he just printed it out on his printer with plain white paper and he scrunched it up making it all old but the funny thing was that it felt like an old $20 bill and it worked in change machines. sweetness
