Try going to http://www.google.ca/ and searching rave history, you'll have about 360,000 sites to look at...
The short version; People have since the begging of recorded history gathered to dance all night to music of one kind or another. People have also used substances to alter their state of mind. |

raves as you know them-
promoter paul oakenfold goes to ibiza. brings balaeric sound back to london. danny rampling opens shoom club. mr. c opens his clink st. club. everyone does lots of mdma- it's 1988 and everyone's losing their heads. authorities catch on and begin to shut down the clubs.. emergence of mobile sound system culture in the UK. raves become one off events in fields, abandoned warehouses, etc. voila, a gross over-simplification. gay party history in north america is more intertwined with rave because the electronic dance sounds of the early - mid 80s emerged out of gay clubs like the warehouse, the music box and the paradise garage. also, at about the same time rave caught on in NA the circuit party began to emerge. circuit parties are essentially gay raves, a few of which happen every year in each major urban center in north america.. not too common outside NA. many started as aids benefits in the early 90's or very late 80's and have transmogrified into parties of gargantuan proportions. people that are into the circuit thing travel all over the continent to go to these parties, hence forming the "circuit." the biggest circuit party in the world happens during thanksgiving weekend right here in canada, in montreal! it is a week long series of events during which you can spend virtually the whole time at clubs and parties, if you want. almost every night of the week there is a party that goes until at least 10AM. at its peak the one-off sunday night main event attracted 25,000 people a year.. its now in decline, though, and attracted only around 15000 this year. about 80,000 people total go to all the different events. it's the 3rd biggest tourist draw in all of Quebec. the most interesting thing is that while the members of each community, rave and circuit, aren't really conscious of each other or even know they exist, the two scenes mimic each other in many ways. savvy promoters are constantly looking to the other for sources of inspiration. so they've really developed in tandem. B'n'b's production company: http://www.bbcm.org/ something for you to chew on. Last edited by QuanNeur; Oct 31, 03 at 02:09 AM. |

... and also keep in mind that the idea behind raving is something that's pretty much been around forever.
Back in the cavemen days, we all used to dance naked around the fire, under the full moon drumming and chanting all night long. |
