All Night Long... All Night..... GO LIONEL RITCHIE!!!!
4 a.m. closing time to continue VANCOUVER (CBC) - Vancouver city council has voted to allow some bars and pubs in the downtown core to continue to stay open until 4 a.m. on weekends. Bar owners and workers are applauding the move by council. But some downtown residents aren't happy. They say the noise from people pouring out of the bars at four o'clock has been unbearable. Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell says people who don't like the noise shouldn't have moved into downtown condos. "Why would you buy a condominium when there are 10 bars in your neighbourhood? I mean it doesn't make any sense," he says. "I think people really have to recognize that when you buy a condominium or you buy a house in the downtown of a major city, it's not like living in the suburbs or living in other parts of the city that are all residential." Police complain they don't have enough officers to patrol the Granville Street strip where the bars are concentrated. They say the longer drinking hours have led to more fights, more public drunkeness and more assaults against police. The extended hours will be in place for up to a year – long enough for city staff to draw up a policy on liquor licensing hours it can apply across the city. © the CBC, 2003 |
