Later bar hours extended for a year
John Bermingham The Province Friday, November 21, 2003 Drinks will be flowing at Vancouver bars two hours later for at least another year after city council agreed to continue the extended-hours experiment. CREDIT: Global BC ADVERTISEMENT Downtown clubs can stay open until 4 a.m. on weekends for at least the next year. Vancouver council voted yesterday to allow bars two extra late-night drinking hours, over the concerns of police and residents. It means bars that used to close at 2 a.m. now close at4 a.m. And bars that used to close at 1 a.m. now close at 3 a.m. Late closing has been allowed as a trial for the past five months. Before the vote, residents in Gastown and Yaletown complained about noise, rowdiness and vandalism they said is brought about by the later bar hours. Judy Smith lives next door to the Bar None in Yaletown. "The noise is unbearable," she told council. "It's the horn honking that drives me nuts." Police say they don't have enough staff to keep tabs on the crowds leaving clubs on Granville Mall. "On Saturday and Sunday mornings, Granville Street looks like Rome after a garbage strike," said Insp. Val Harrison. "We are concerned. The decision is not unexpected. Disappointing perhaps." Mayor Larry Campbell said the extension will give council time to review how the pilot project worked. He said people who live downtown are going to have to endure greater noise. "Why would you buy a condo when there are 10 bars in your neighbourhood?" he asked. John Teti, who chairs the bar owners' group Barwatch, said council should have made it 4 a.m. across the board. He said the later hours have helped bars deal with rising costs in an economic downturn. "It wasn't about making money," said Teti. "This was about saving the industry." |
