Duty/ebay question

Will I have to pay duty on this item? GST/PST?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...&ed=1073606306

it came to about $80cdn on the money order. How much is duty on something like this?

Duty is dependent on where the item is manufactured.

If it is made in the USA then there is no duty on the item but you pay GST on the purchase price.

If the item is sent USPS you might get lucky and they never look at it. If it is sent UPS/Fed Ex then you will have to pay a brokerage fee plus any other incedental charges before you get the item when they deliver it.

I had a $40 item I won sent via UPS and had to pay a $28 brokerage fee even though there was nothing charged.

Best bet is to sent it to a shipping depot like The Letter Carrier and go pick it up personally, put it in your camera bag and bring it back with you. Costs $2 for them to accept the item on your behalf and just smile on the way home.

what I usually do is ask the seller when he is filling out the customs declaration form is to state that it has no commercial value & is a gift.

they don't tax or impose duty on gifts.

They do actually.

There is a $40 (think it is $40) exemption and the remainder of the value of goods is taxable.

Most sellers are not willing to do that anymore due to declaration issues.
