This is normally one of those incidents that incites a 'workplace shoot-up' but, fortunately, you're probably much more sensible than that.
Can't say that's ever happened to me before (mainly because it hasn't) but I'd take the opportunity to look for a better job. If they're letting you go during the slow season (which Jan. and Feb. typically are) then you probably don't rank all that high on their importance list. :soak: |

All righty....so shit is going down....
so i went into work today..(i decided to work my final 2 shifts this weekend...since i need the money)......and looked on the schedule to see that everyone else was still on the schedule and noone else was laid off.... when my boss called me to tell me i was laid off she specifically said " we have to lay you off because theres not enough hours and its really slow.....and i'll have to lay some other people off too..." the only thing she did was lay me off and give my 2 shifts to some other girl (who just started 2 months ago...) so pretty much shes a fucking liar and made up that b.s....i think i am more angry than anything..i have been working there for 2 years..sooooo apprently she has a problem with me but is too fucking pussy to confront me about it...i think its only fair if she has an issue with me to at least tell me so i can fix the problem ...not be childish and just be like..ok ...i have no excuse to fire you..so i'll make up some bullshit and "lay you off"....fucking bitch :finger: im calling labour relations. :moon: |

Did you have personality problems or any clashes with the boss?
You might be able to get severance pay if you've been laid off without much notice - they used to give 1 month severance pay per year of employment for professional type jobs, less for junior type jobs, but I don't know what they do now, iit might be more. So that might mean 2 months severance pay for you. It is called "payment in lieu of notice of termination" or similar - an employment lawyer would know about that stuff, also "wrongful dismissal". Basically they must compensate you if they have no good reason to terminate you, and you did not do anything wrong, because you would reasonably expect your job to be continuing. BTW just throwing a few of these words at them would probably scare them and get them to cough up, especially if this is a big company. :kam: Last edited by tvmann; Jan 18, 04 at 02:32 PM. |

I worked for a big company for 7 years and got 7 months severance pay at layoff time. Downsizing.
That was the standard deal, and it got better later on. Big companies do not want to be sued, and want to try to keep a good reputation, even if they really are shafting you. Small companies try to avoid paying anything, especially to lower-level employees. |

Do you want me to come over and take the bitch out? Apparently you don't have much money right now so I'll do it for fun, ok....
And Veni, stick with being laid off, it's better than being fired (although i do agree your ho bag manager is just a pussy) - point being, no EI if you get fired and full EI if you get laid off... so it's actually kind of a good thing. And really, you're not gonna want to bother sueing anybody over such a minimal amount of $$. |

Jan + Feb are the worst months for most businesses, so most places have to let people go at that time, it's especially bad if it is dependent on tourists... |

its the principle of the whole thing...if she needed to lay someone off....why was it me? ive been working there for 2 years.... there are 4 people below me on the chain.,...she just gave my shifts to one of the newer girls. |
