Plaza of Nations will be a Casino
I know this was posted in another forum, but here is the full story:
VANCOUVER - In a close vote after two days of hearings, Vancouver city council has given the green light to a new casino at the Plaza of Nations. Supporters of the planned gaming facility, which would include up to 600 slot machines, say it will create 400 full-time jobs, while generating $10-$12 million for the city each year. Opponents voiced concerns about gambling addiction, increased traffic and crime during two nights of public hearings, but councillors ultimately voted 5-4 in favour. Coun. Jim Green, who previously opposed slots, says his change of heart was based on neighbouring communities that have already started bringing in money from the machines. "Now that [slots] are in Richmond and Burnaby, they're a few minutes away, and all those revenues are going out of Vancouver," said Green. "So it's not that people aren't going to gamble and play slots, it's who gets the revenue and what do you do with it.... "It's a competitive game now, and trying to keep our people alive and healthy and working is our most important thing." Green approved the proposal with one condition: that the casino operators hire low-income residents from the Downtown Eastside. The new casino could be operational as early as May. I voted and petitioned against a resort type casino when the Mirage group wanted to build one a few years ago by Canada Place.
This casino with that many slots is just a bad idea considering the close proximity to the Downtown Eastside. The people in poverty have it bad enough without trying to take a chance with what little they have to try and 'double it up'. Before you poke me with a stick I do know both sides of gambling as an observer and a active participant. I have seen the winners and seen the impact it has on the people that lose. In the end everyone loses. |

Twisted 2004, our signature party and which is scheduled to be held on Saturday, April 10th, 2004 (Easter Long Weekend) will be Twisted's last party at the Plaza of Nations.
Azim and I are almost finished putting together the line-up so stay tuned. My gut tells me that given it is our last show at that venue, it is going to be like what Wett was... 3000 people, in line before 10PM! Stay tuned... |
