vancouvers bum problem
so today the sun started a series on the growing homeless problem in vancouver and it was kinda interesting...the majority of bums used to be middle aged men, but now there's a growing number of teens, seniors and families living on the streets
i'm not going to summarize the whole thing, this is starting to feel like highschool homework, but.... how do you think this problem should be dealt with? and my main question, should the governement be helping out drug addicts, and ex druggies trying to get a life? ps. i HATE bums |

oh hjow i hate bums especially when you go downtown. Although ill usually give money to a bum here and there but only those that look decent enough to help. By that i mean the bums that look like their not gonna be buying drugs with the money you give them. Obviously this is just something you assume but some bums make it seem pretty obvious

on another note does anybody ever see this middle aged white lady who looks decent and by that i mean she doesnt look like a bum. I always see her walking up and down robson saying she needs a quarter for something. Last 5 times i went downtown i saw her asking the exact same question jsut wondering if anybody ahs encountered her.

the sad part is that they are humping and making bum babies addicted to crank
i say screw all druggies trying to get assistance...like wtf is with these shooting sites!??! they should make safe houses for ravers to pop e in and sketch out in the morning while they're at it heh i got the funniest bum story ever...there's woman beating in it too! |

as for addiction : i'm a firm supporter of harm reduction programs (safe injection etc).
it doesn't solve the problem, but it's not designed to either. i saw somethin on tv mentioning how it cut the emergency service costs in half in the downtown area alone. as for the homeless issue...having been in those shoes, everyone has there low points. im not gonna suggest what should or shouldn't be done, cuz i honestly couldn't tell you other than i think more 'gathering places' - places you can do your laundry, shower, and brush your teeth should be in place. you can't brush these people under a carpet or shoe them into a corner. |

How about maybe some affordable housing or shelters, drug rehabilitation programs, work programs, food banks, educational/lifeskills programs, and special needs medicines for those with mental disabilities...Oh yea, and how about people start treating the homeless like people instead of a problem.

i used to be all 'rehabilitate bums, most have trouvled lives, don't be so cruel!'.
seeing my girlfriend work downtown and knowing she has had death threat made on her person from robson bums makes me wanna not fucking care anymore. |

in calgary there is a shelter for the bums to sleep and eat at....so guess what that makes calgary? .....Bum Central. they all come here b/c they know they have clean and warm place to sleep and eat...and that also makes them less inclined to get off their ass's to get a job. what for, they get life for free........

yeah, my sister was a street kid, she used to say living on the streets was better than living at home, cus you can make a hundred dollars or more in a day panhandling, you can do drugs all day and then go somewhere to get a yummy meal and free clothes and use the phone, all without having to work much more than saying "spare some change?"
that's why i NEVER give money to them. |

You always see the occasional homeless who doesn't need to be there and actually likes being a streetperson but for every one of those there are 10 who don't want to be there. Examples:
Someone who has a mental disability (schizophrenia). This can be easily treated with the right medication but without it they can suffer from paranoid delusions, hallucinations, etc. It is not like these people can go get help for this cause everyone just thinks they are "cracked out". They therefore live and die in the streets. How about the kid that comes from a broken home and had to run away at a young age. They have been taken advantage of their whole lives. Who are they going to trust? They have neither the education or the skills to get even a decent job and they have no address that employers can call or proper clothes to wear to an interview. Then again there is the junky who may want to try and clean themselves up. They ask for help but all their friends are junkies. For those of you who have actually seen someone trying to get off of heroin it is not as easy as what you think. They need support and caring. That is something that most of these people don't have. Yes, some can get help and choose to be on the street but most would rather not be and can't get the help that they need as the existing social programs are extremely lacking. It is disheartening to hear how much ignorance and coldness the people on here have when most of them don't even have the faintest idea what it is like out there. Hell, I barely do except what some of these people have told me and what I have seen. Goat seems to be the only one with some insight and he is also the only one that is not talking about treating the homeless like a problem. One of the measures of the greatness of a civilization is how it treats its lowest class of citizen. |
