Because that's where you wire circuitboards.

I don't happen to have one as I'm not a computer engineer.

I'm sure it was just a short, it either went through the system board or stopped at the power supply. More then likely, as was mentioned before the processor or system board need to be replaced. I'd take it out and check the capacitors beside the FSB, they may look bubbled over.. i've seen it on many short circuted main boards.

if you have a decent video card then you really just need a mother board with a cpu ,sound and nic, all built in....
(possibly a new power supply too)

Uh oh! You're not supposed to let the Magic Smoke out of Electronic things!

I fried a Video Card once... saw it glow and smoke... kinda cool actually.
